Window covering challenge, I'm desperate for ideas!

I have a home in the Colorado mountains near Vail ski resort. It has a light-filled open concept. My issue is with window coverings. Most of the windows face south, the others fast west. The sun at 8,000' can be intense, hot and fade our art and furnishings. In the winter, it can be very cold so I need an insulating treatment. I currently have lined curtains, but when they are closed the house is super dark. I also have electric baseboard heaters so all my curtains look like high water pants which is why I sheers and curtains aren't any easy fix. I like the idea of solar roller shades so we could have some light and view even when they are closed, but I don't think they provide enough insulation in the winter. The large upper window would have to have an automated shade since it's so high. They also don't make solar shades wide enough for the largest lower window which is 129.5" wide, at least not that I have found. Does anyone have a brilliant idea?
