What does the INSIDE of your house look like right now? hahahaha
Comments (51)We moved a couple of months ago and I had to let the yard (I can't be called a garden at this point yet) just be... no matter how painful it was. My focus was house house house... it was ours but we had rented it and they turned it into a crack house. Well, we kicked them out and after a month of making it livable we moved. However, the work had only just begun... we removed popcorn from ceilings, replaced fixtures and doors... and we still aren't finished. But my focus has shifted.... causing much distress for my poor DH. (He works a lot right now so the house is all on me) I have been digging out the years of neglect (When he and I began dating he was in a different house, which we lived in prior to this move... a master gardener had lived there prior and all I had to do was maintain it all). The house we are in now was his, but he doesn't bother with anything but mowing the weeds and it has been at least 3 or 4 years since anyone has done anything here other than that. All the beds had been filled with rock, the yard is weeds and sand, it is bad. The good news... we have gorgeous trees and a great spot on a lake... so the potential is there :) Back to the topic of the post, since I started focusing on the yard and my garden in the making the house has gone to hell. There are clothes everywhere, still boxes that didn't get unpacked, spare bed is covered in christmas stuff that needs to go in the attic, no clean dishes to be found, dirt and dust galore... Ugh! My kitchen is covered in potting soil and plant seedlings, cuttings, pots and trays. I don't have a potting bench or anything even close yet, so the kitchen has been converted. My ottoman has become my sort and send for my seed trading, there are baggies of seeds everywhere.. Everywhere! My living room is littered with bubble evies... it is terrible. Best part is, a friend of ours is in need of a place to stay for a little while so he;s moving in this weekend. I am going to go into cleaning shock... and yet I'm still determined to get in some yard work this weekend. We'll see how things turn out... this is my first real garden (of my own) and the first time I've been completely responsible for so much (I'm kinda young still... just finished college and am starting out fresh... but with the love of my life so its all good!). I'm just looking forward to next spring, when I will have been properly prepared and things can really look nice :) Kim (cottage style junkie and newbie)...See MoreWhat's the prettiest thing in your garden right now?
Comments (10)My grapes are really pretty right now. I know this sounds dumb but I've got them on an arbor and they are loaded with bunches of grapes hanging down and turning a dusty rose color. Underneath I've got dill in bloom so it's a bright chartreuse, Matrona Sedum ready to bloom with the stems about the same color as the grapes, a huge cloud of Cilantro in full bloom, hostas and yellow marigolds, and I think it's very pretty. Not very conventional, but pretty. Hey Maude - I have white butterfly ginger for the first time this year and received it from someone down south so can't ask them for any zone 4 advice. How do I go about growing that in Iowa? Mine's not very tall and nowhere near blooming yet. I potted it assuming I'd have to winter it indoors. ?????...See MoreWhats in bloom in your garden right now?
Comments (44)Hi Michelle Sorry for the delay in responding - just got back from holiday in Turkey. As I feared, there had been a few frosts during my absence but damage to my Salvias has been limited to a minimal number of plants and the garden is still looking pretty good. This is in contrast to a garden about 2 miles away (a pub garden where I also plant lots of Salvias) where just about everything has been blackened. It just goes to show what differences there can be in mesoclimates. Even within my own garden which has the advantage of being on a slight slope, there are microclimates where the flow of cold air is restricted and a specific Salvia can be badly frosted whereas equivalent plants, only a few yards away, can completely escape damage. My soil has a large proportion of clay but, over the 25 or so years I have been here, I have mulched with various products such as mushroom compost and composted manure to help build up a top layer of better tilth. I root lots of cuttings and the old soil from all the pots also gets thrown onto the garden. Surprising how this all adds up to improve the soil. Most years, in early summer, I try to give the garden a 2" mulch of some sort to help keep it in good heart. I know many Salvias don't need this but I plant very closely and the mulch helps with moisture retention and weed supression. If I go back 10 years or more, I always got a hard frost about mid-September which knocked off my Salvias (except most microphylla types). Since then, although the thermometer always dips around this time, temperatures are not so low and then we seem to then often survive for at least another month. Last year was even better and the Salvias were not really hit until early December when we became blanketed by snow. Ignoring any general global warming trend, I read that we may now be moving into a short term cooler period (there seems to be a cycle of about 25 years or so between highs and lows) and so I may have to get used to September frosts once again. Of course, by then, I may be just pushing up daisies and not bothering with Salvias. Naturally you are most welcome to visit although from the above you can guess that timing can be crucial if you want to see the display at its best. You must also take in Robin's garden as he always has gems that we others drool over. I'm thinking about your request of naming the plants in my pics. It's a bit of a task but probably worth the effort. Give me some time on this. Finally, I was pleased to see Robin include Salvia 'Imelda' on his site. This was a seedling I found near S. greggii 'Peach' in late 2008 and which flowered for me in 2009. I named it after my wife's middle name. It is proving to be much sturdier than Peach - which I love but seem to lose after a couple years or so. Here is a pic of the very first flower of Imelda: Jim...See MoreWhat perennial is blooming in your yard right now?
Comments (37)My dianthus and gerberas bloom year-round, but they especially like this time of year. My mouse ear coreopsis is blooming, and my azalea that I planted last fall has suddenly exploded. Although it's already peaked, for a while there my columbine looked like it had yellow fireworks bursting all over it. I was especially pleased with that, because I thought I had lost it after foolishly planting it in the dead of summer. I was so pleased, in fact, that I went out and bought two more this spring. I also have a volunteer that sprouted in the middle of my yard last summer that was so pretty I moved it into a bed. It's full of purple blooms right now - I'm pretty sure it's some type of petunia. Sadly, once again, my gardenia isn't blooming, and doesn't even have buds - but I may have found out why. I bought a new desk this weekend, and in cleaning out the old one, I found the tag for it, and saw that it advises pruning off the previous summer's new growth in winter - which I've never done. I'm going to assume that encourages blooming, and will make a point of doing it this year. I think that's all of the existing perennials that are blooming - right now my yard is crazy with color but the rest are either annuals or are newly planted this spring....See MoreLars
