What was this from? (cordyline issue)

It's growing fine now but this happened over late winter.. I am wondering what it is from? Maybe cool temps? or too much water? Have any California members seen this?

Cordylines are susceptible to rust disease. That’s what you have there imo.

It looks like it might have gotten burnt foliage from a heat wave, from what I can see in the photos. The newest foliage that is more vertical seems entirely unaffected, and the flatter leaves at the tips seem to be the ones that got crispy. I'd suggest mulching around the base of the plant to retain moisture, trim off the burnt parts to better track if this is getting worse or was a one time event, and when you water, it is probably better to water for at least 5 to 10 minutes with spray irrigation and not do this every day unless necessary to get new plants established. Cordyline australis cultivars should actually be pretty drought tolerant and get by with just once a week deep soaks even in 100 degree weather, if the soil is well mulched. On the other hand, this is a species that comes from New Zealand where it seldom gets to be 100F for weeks at a time, so it could just be the heat. If this continues to happen every summer, even as the plant becomes deeper rooted, this would seem to indicate that in your climate with your summer heat, it would prefer some dappled shade at the hottest time of the day, rather than full sun. The green leafed Cordyline australis species is certainly much hardier/resistant to sunburning, the newer colored forms are more prone to sun damage with high heat.

Jen, it's been a while since I had a Ti, but living in IL, mine had to come indoors in winter. Once spring came, I set out in 'full sun'. The more sun colors are more pronounced.. In winter, I use a humidifier, mist daily, and only water when soil feels dry..(also in summer) Overwatring will cause root rot. The sad thing growing Ti's indoors is they're prone to spider mites..So, check plant thoroughly. Some mites are difficult detecting..especially in early stages. and we all know how destructive those little critters are. Good luck, Toni

A good example of why you don't buy a house with zero setback on one side. Some basic info adding on to what Suzi said above. Stucco walls are only resistant to water. If there is no eaves protecting them from rainfall or if there are winds causing rain to hit them, they can get fairly wet inside. They have a space behind the stucco and any water that penetrates flows down the inside and out the weep screed. Soil needs to be 4" below that and the ground needs to slope away from the house at 5% minimum. 2% is allowed for a hard surface. If the project had a geotechnical report, it could make additional requirements. I guess that is a long preamble for my next statement, which is that the weep screed is there to get water out of the wall from rain and maybe some spray from watering - not drip watering. His ground level better NOT be higher than your cement slab. Clearly, there can NEVER be standing water above your slab level. He is totally wrong about his liability based upon what we see in your information, limited as it may be. Even without the zero lot line variable, it is routine large damage payments for excess watering, sprinkler leaks, or changes in grade drainage issues causing problems for downhill lots. Also, do your eaves hang over into his property? Are you in a HOA? Edited to add: I noticed this in a forum dedicated to old houses. Stucco houses built before about 1980 or so probably don't have a weep screed at all. Is this an "old" house, whatever that means.

After doing some further online research, I concur it is Tradescantia spathacea "Dwarf". Most of the pictures of this plant have broad leaves and deep pink undersides, which is NOT like my plant. But then I found a picture of a variety with more slender leaves and the light pink edges my plant has, a perfect match to my plant. So, you guys are RIGHT and I sincerely thank you. The source also said that this plant is POISONOUS to pets, and I have two beloved kitties. So, I will rehome the plant to my nail salon; they will be happy to have a pretty plant to add to their big front window.

Cordylines do not have to be in a greenhouse in California :-) They don't even need a greenhouse here in most parts of the PNW!

I agree with floral that it is a fungal issue - rust or leaf spot are both common cordyline afflictions but can be treated. IME, the red leafed forms are more inclined to this problem than the green.

RUST ! AHH! Yes gardengal48. No reason to have a GH in beautiful California lol. I'm talking more in general about those who grow this variety year round outdoors. From what I have seen that is THE hot spot for them(California). None of the new growth is affected which I'm happy about. I will look into that. Thanks guys much appreciated!

I have two in my inherited garden up here by Puget Sound that are a good 15-20' tall and are at least 30 years old. But just the green leaf form......red leaf cordylines like Red Star have a reputation for being a bit less cold tolerant.

That sounds beautiful! I was out in Vancouver last fall and was amazed at the green ones that were everywhere. I knew they grew there but to ssee some of those tres in person I was so happy.

So I just did some checking back in old photos. I have had it late winter for the past 3 years. It does out grow it and not having to treat it. I always thought it was from the cooler temps in Jan, now I know! As far as I have noticed nothing around it gets infected.

Sharper winter in Seattle area several years ago killed off red ones in locations where green ones held up. As in red completely dead, green not.

The discoloration you are asking about is very common on these up here. Apart from them being apt to freeze down to the root crown rather often except in the mildest locations in view of salt water this spottiness keeps me from buying and planting any.
