Loved this article because it had some very useful ideas AND It was very timely since we are in the midst of purchasing decor for our daughter's dorm room. Hoping to make it as comforting as possible since it's her first year.

Very nice rooms and very timely article -- my oldest son has just moved away for grad school. His room in an apartment is long and thin and has the adjustable bed for underbed storage, but he's keeping it low because he's overweight. I don't see that he'll do much decorating, per se, but we did buy him a lot of stuff to set up his first apartment space, which is beautiful and in an awesome building designed for student housing. He signed a lease for a room in a 4-bedroom apartment and so far he has no roommates! They do their best to match people up who have similar interests.

I remember my freshman college dorm room. I roomed with my best friend from high school, who had gone there the year before so was a sophomore and knew more about college life than I did after my gap year -- I think a lot of the decorating was her idea. It was the late 70s and thinking back I realize we had a kind of a hippie boho theme. The room had a tall window with a wide ledge and the usual 2 dorm beds and desks and dressers. We coordinated with cheap Indian print cotton bedspreads from a local emporium and she brought 2 old armchairs and a small table from home. We had something like 36 plants all over the room and filling up the window; one even hung from the floor lamp that had a curved pole. (A little hard to keep up with watering all of them -- one of our friends used to routinely come in and poke his finger into a dry pot and say "I hear water is good for plants!") We hung art print posters on the walls (I recall that one of them was Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights triptych -- and this was before I became an Art History major!). Our room was a huge hit with our friends because it was so comfortable and welcoming and homey. I wonder if we would have won a decorating contest if they'd had such a thing!
