what are good hardwired motorized shades?

Building a new house and has the large inaccessible windows wired with cat6 network cable since it’s so versatile to use. Need to find a good brand. Any suggestions?

Hunter Douglas, Lutron, Crestron are some well known brands that work well with automation.

Following. I’m building with 2 windows that will need shades. Going to see about putting outlets up there, but everything I’ve found is battery or solar, not wired. I may go solar if the outlet will be noticeable, but I get overwhelmed when I start to research. There are so many options

Just to let you all know. Sunsetter customer service is pretty darn good, I'll tell you that. After installing the awning, DH noticed a small hole slightly larger than a pinhole in the fabric. It wasn't a huge deal, but concerned that it may run or become a weak spot as time went on and the sun continues to beat down on it, we called Sunsetter to see if there was an easy fix for this. They offered us #1 a clear patch to go on the outside of the awning, making it less noticeable from underneath or #2 an entirely new awning fabric. We didn't want a patch for a couple reasons...First, the people behind us are elevated slightly and have perfect view of the top of our awning. Also, over time, we were concerned the patch would loose adhesive, curl up on the sides and just look bad. Plus, we just got this awning and can't see spending the money we did to just patch it, not matter how small the hole, and then it wouldn't even match the color. The hole is obviously a defect in this particular roll of material since there was not damage to the package and the thing was packed up unbelievably well. Maybe if there was some type of tube of acrylic that hardened to the same color and you couldn't notice it, we would've chosen something like that, but not a clear plastic patch. Another surprising fact about this whole thing...Sunsetter asked me if I wanted the same color fabric! They were ready to allow me to order whatever color fabric I wanted from their selection. We stuck with the taupe because that is our favorite color fabric anyway and aren't fans of the striped awning fabrics. But I thought that was pretty impressive on the part of Sunsetter customer service. They really seem to want to make the customer happy.

Need advice/suggestion for a motorized outdoor solar shade/screen

I'm wondering about the same shades - I need a solar screen but don't want to introduce PVC inside the house - already too many toxic chemicals in the cocktail we breath. I love the idea of catching the heat before it penetrates the glass. Does anyone have any experience with these outdoor shades? Do they blow around in the wind? Are they easy to operate? How much of the view do they obscure? Do they work? I also read someplace that they can only be all-up or all-down, no inbetween settings. Is this true? Can't have the shade only half-closed? Thanks.

I have motorized shades and I can't imagine not having them. It is perhaps a small thing but how wonderful it is to lie in bed and/or stay seated or even not have to walk from a room where I am doing stuff in order to adjust the shades. My shades are fairly innocuous because I am using them solely in the morning when sun from my Eastern exposure is extremely intense. I have the kind that are not entirely opaque. I also have sun blocking film on the windows to limit damaging UVA light since I keep the shades up when the sun is no longer glaring since I don't need them for privacy and I have a wonderful view. I also have decorative window treatments to soften the look of the room but they are not functional and so don't need to be motorized since they are not closed or opened. Mine are QMotion which were recommended by my designer as being excellent quality and less expensive than brands heavily advertised to consumers like Hunter Douglas since they do a lot of commercial sales.

Thanks for the responses, these are very helpful. We'll see if we can track down the "building engineer", but I'm not sure how likely we are to find someone who can tell us where to mount the blinds. But the idea of trying to see what others in the building have done is certainly a good one, there are many units there with blinds installed. @Patricia Colwell good tip about the solar shades - would those work for both glare control (the TV is facing the west windows) and solar heat gain control? @ptreckel yes, the view is fantastic, so we definitely want to get the shades right!

I would suspect that with blinds, a plug into an outlet would always be noticeable. Since the market for 120V hardwired blinds would be just on new houses, your choices may be limited. And even when you have 120V, how do you cover the wires? (for Haylo, not OP)

Now curtains - I have 120V. But the wire and motor assembly is easily covered.

I think the right answer is not to build houses with inaccessible windows. I have one (that I built) and I should have done something different. I have no blinds on that window - the only one in the house. And dusting the sill is a chore. And the window is not exactly clean over the years.

Even for control, you will find wireless so much more common (because <1% will have cat6 to their windows).

@chispa I want to stay away from Lutron because of their proprietary communication protocol. Crearon I am unsure of because I believe it is same as Lutron you need to buy their whole system for it to work together. Looking for more of a ZWave or open API type of system. I saw Powershades may be one. I’m unfamiliar with Hunter Douglas will check them out

Hi @David so for me the cat6 wire is hidden in the window. So basically you can strip the wire and use it as a 2 conductor wire for pretty much a variety of applications one of them being motorized shades to power them up. I do notice a lot of those blinds being battery powered but some can be AC powered which is what I need. Maybe even if it needs an outlet I can cut the cord and use the cat6 as an extension code for the 2 conductor wire potentially haven’t tried it
