I have seen so many beautiful photos and read wonderful things about Paul Barden's gallica Marianne. The photos and the descriptions make my heart sing. A while ago I put myself on the wait-list at Rogue Valley Roses and I just got a notice that it's back in stock. I don't know if I'll have space for it, so I haven't yet ordered it. It is a really beautiful rose -- definitely worth getting. Something I notice a lot as an artist who spends time drawing and painting flowers is that many MANY modern roses have absolutely floppy forms. Sure, they have a lot of petals and nice colors, but when it comes to the underlying geometry of the bloom many contemporary roses look boring compared to old roses. Marianne on the other hand is technically modern, but WOW she has the best geometry -- like the rose window of a gothic cathedral. I love this rose. (And I don't mean to disparage informal, wind-blown looking roses here --like Souvenir de St Anne's or some of the teas-- I enjoy those too but they also have a special formal character that is often lacking in the roses I'm referring to above).

I appreciated the post and explanation. It seems it would be very difficult to run a business like that, and we must remember that only these smaller ones, generally, grow and sell the more unusual roses we so crave. They seem to be family operations, and trying to juggle all of it would be really hard. RVR I didn't count the number offered, but it seems huge. Imagine trying to guess how many to propagate of which each season and the enormous amount of work in the field and possibly greenhouse, let alone the sales end of it! No complaints about RVR, and it would take a serious annoyance before I'd make a fuss publicly. But I don't think it is wrong to discuss it as long as it is just stating the facts and not intended to turn other customers whose experiences may be different away. They had what I wanted. No one else did except one I found out later in my other post going here about RVR. I have 2 Hettie and 2 Awakening I got from bands, Barden roses. They don't do well in my zone without a lot of extra fussing in the winter. BUT they seem resistant to blackspot and almost everything except Jap beetles, shiny leaves, no spraying, maybe kelp. I so wanted Marianne and Jeri but will pass now.

Well, yikes, came across this old thread while trying to figure out what is going on with my Cabbage rose from RVR. Based on the discussion and pictures here it seems my two year old Cabbage Rose is really Russelliana instead. I wasn’t planning on a rambler this size! Anyone have pictures of her being trained rather than left to ramble? Can she be contained to say 8x8 or kept flat along a fence? That‘s about the most I can give her. She is beautiful and I would love to keep her if I can figure out a placement in my already crowded urban lot. I wonder if the original rose was labeled in a messy cursive and so The Cottage rose became The Cabbage rose and so it remains on the RVR website to this day 🤷‍♀️

Folks, I'm going to shill on Paul's behalf. If you love once-blooming roses, you have to have 'Marianne'. She is one of the most glorious sights you will ever see (at least in rosedom) when she matures. She's healthy, robust, vigorous, has a beautiful bloom, and an awesome (literally awe inducing) flush. I'm pretty sure she produces a bloom at every leaf node. She also has a wonderful fruity and damask perfume. I've said it before, this is the best modern gallica available (unless it's Gallicandy, lol). Think of it as a healthy, once-blooming Abe Darby, with 20x the blooms. Mine is still relatively small, but was one of the highlights of my Spring garden, even after the not-dear deer trimmed her.

The roses seem to have disappeared into the ether and RVR is 100% disinterested in doing anything about it. They have not even confirmed that they will stand by their guarantee that the roses will be "healthy, accurately labeled, and ready to grow. ” I have a general rule not to order plants on-line for this very reason but some roses are hard to come by. I'm disappointed in them, their communication, and their choice of delivery service. For $20+ in delivery fees they could have used a provider like FedEx or UPS. I don't understand their lack of communication because the method they used to deliver is insured so there would be no pecuniary loss to themselves. I have bought $100s if not $1000s of roses from them and I won't do it again. I'm too old and too cranky to deal with this kind of customer service.

K S 8b Seattle I've often thought similar things about Marianne just looking at the photographs. Reading your comment just now...well, I'm no longer on the fence! I just emailed and asked if they could add Marianne to my order--the timing is just barely off...I placed my order 2 weeks ago! Hopefully they can accommodate, as it's not shipping for a couple of more weeks. While she's a baby I'll figure out the perfect spot for her.

Every time I see Marianne, I wish it was available here! A few of Paul's varieties are available in Europe (e.g. Janet Inada in Denmark) but I have yet to find out how to get them...
