Kitchen layout idea for 19 X 14 space

I'm interested in putting a kitchen in a space that is currently a sunroom enclosed with sliding glass doors. So doors and windows shown here are just an idea. I originally wanted several windows along the 20' wall but realized because it is south facing it may be too hot.

I can't decide if I should put cabinets all along that back wall and have an island, as shown below. It seems too spread out, too big? If I try splitting the kitchen space in half (kitchen on the left, dining on the right, for example) things seem too cramped. Any ideas?

Fourteen feet is too shallow to have cabinets, an island, and dining table with chairs, and allow passage.

Halve it into the 2 rooms that it needs to be unless you have a 100K+ budget for this as a middle of the road level project. If you do have that budget, then be prepared to add multiple sinks. It’s too big to work without multiple water sources, for multiple work stations, for multiple people. Bigger is not better. It’s a ton more expense and a ton more walking yourself to death.

After obsessing on the computer and sleepless nights, we taped out and labeled things on the floor. It was very clear that we can not have the wall in front of the powder room/basement steps come out as far as we have it . It severely blocks any view when you come in thru the front entrance hallway -you just have a view of the back of the wall. We also thought that we may be better of with the french door/side panels located on the left side rather than centered as we currently have sliders there and can use the existing bluestone steps(2) and not take away more of the center of the patio with new steps. So...I did not like the limited view from the kitchen with the doors off center so we are considering putting in a large set of windows above the snack/bar area with a pass thru to the patio(thanks bmorepanic). Then that may solve my dilemma of the sink/view issues. If I put the clean up sink on the side I can still see the yard thru those windows and we can have upper cabinets on that wall for dishes/glasses. Also opens up space in front of the cook area So here are the questions: 1)where would you put the prep sink? in the island and where? or at the snack station/bar 2)we no longer had room for 2 appliances on the 8' wall so I put the ref back on the right wall-looks like good access for both the cook and the kids/others seated at the island/patio and access thru the yard door of the mudroom. Is this ok (assuming we build in proper clearance for the mudroom doorway/fridge door area? 3)Is there any reason to switch the clean up sink with the oven as suggested as a possible layout earlier? Any other comments? We will be working with the architect again to come up with proper distances/clearances but wanted to have a decent idea of our changes first. Thanks a ton for all the help!

Wow, this thread got busy while I was drawing. Here's my suggestion for you: I kept the back door but moved it to the far left end. Clean-up area is under windows. The working portion of your kitchen is book-ended by fridge at one end and double ovens at the other. I nixed the nook - just not enough space for comfortable seating - for island seating but I like your latest versions of a table butted up against an island, too. I gave you a more gracious entry to the DR, mimicking the entry to the LR. That entry is bordered by large (est 99" tall, hopefully you're doing custom cabs) pull-out pantry cabs to give you lots of storage. I couldn't tell what kind of fridge you intend to purchase so I opted to err on the side of caution and assume a standard depth fridge (box, doors and handles approx 35" deep). If you plan on a counter-depth fridge, you can increase your island by 4" of so (CD fridges are about 31" with box, doors and handles). I went with the recommended minimum aisles of 42" for a one-butt kitchen (the GW way of saying one-cook kitchen). 36" isn't deemed wide enough for today's appliances. For instance, DW doors are taller so take up more aisle room when open.

I have truly appreciated all your help in getting our project off the ground. Although it is the holiday tomorrow, we haven’t heard from our architect since last Thursday. We originally engaged our architect in February, and it will have been 5 months in the design phase of a 500 sf addition, which basically adds a master bed and bath. For context, it was supposed to take 4 weeks to get through design and on to construction documents. Instead, it has taken us 5 months. It took 4 weeks to provide an initial 2-story design which we liked, then 4 weeks to realize that he hadn’t accounted for the city setback and redesign a 2-story we didn’t like, 3 weeks to deliver a 1-story design without a setback (but that didn’t have a layout that worked), 2 weeks to redraw a drawing that I sent over. I pretty much thought we were done on May 25 and off to construction documents, but used all the extra time this past month to get the bathroom right. Is this typical of the design process? It seems to be taking longer than anticipated, given the scope of work. I still don't think we are on to construction documents, and he indicated this could take another 3 weeks. Appreciate your thoughts on whether this experience is common.

Hello Diane Miralis , Something about your profile photo does NOT scream, 'man cave...' 14x24 is large enough to do most anything so that's a plus. Often the simplest solution is the best solution. Maybe keeping it an arts & craft room is the move, but make it more of a warm creative space. It currently looks like where one would be doing surgery or kitchen prep, where an easel, some nicer storage a giant marker board wall for ideas. Another simple solution could be a library/sitting room - nice bookshelves, comfy furniture pieces an awesome globe, a little wine cabinet & a chess board. Low on tech, high on comfort and engagement. And finally, in that big space you could probably fit a ping pong table or pool table, some modern seating or benches, a mini fridge for drinks. I posted this on your other thread, but with the layout flipped. After reading the direction the room faces I flipped it so the wall of windows on the dining side would face east.

I appreciate the feedback. @User, I tried halving the space but having the double doors eat up wall space and make it look cramped. This is the current layout (we just bought it). What about using some of that 20X14 square footage and making a screened in porch?

Hey @mama goose_gw zn6OH, I like the concept you've drawn up but I would like to have doors on both left and right side of the kitchen to access deck/screened in porch. Are those cabinets on the back wall a mix of upper and lower cabinets? Do you think the 20 ft wall is too long?

In the previous plan, I drew a pantry in one corner and uppers in the other corner, with a wide window over the sink (before I read that the 20' wall faces south).

You could have doors on both short walls, but they wouldn't be double doors, and they wouldn't be opposite each other:

Thank you @mama goose_gw zn6OH for these ideas. I think a one wall kitchen with an island will work in that space without being too large if I have the range/fridge/sink like you have it.

@mama goose_gw zn6OH yes, sorry you posted your ideas on this thread not the other. If cabinets/appliances fill the 20ft wall, how long do you think the island should be? You mentioned at least 7.5 to accommodate 4 seats. Do I need to consider size of the island and size of the dining table (generally kept at 8 ft but expanded to 10ft) or is that not necessary?
