Custom stainless hood duct vent cover

Hello, I've asked my HVAC person to fabricate a custom stainless steel hood duct vent cover for our Best hood because Best did not have a vent cover that was taller than 12 inches, and I have 22 3/4 inches to the ceiling that I'd like to cover up.

I assumed that when the HVAC sub offered to fabricate one that they would install one without visible screws, but now they are "thinking on it" and I need to meet my building inspection deadline in 8 days. Does anyone have any experience with a similar installation?

There are holes in the top of the vent hood flange that I think it could attach to, but I was wondering if they also need to attach to the wall, and because I have no upper cabinetry, how would they "hide" the way it has to attach to the wall?

thanks for any help. also, they can only machine 24 gauge or lighter stainless steel which may be a bit wobbly (the hood itself is 22 gauge) and wondered if anyone has a vent cover that is made from 24 gauge and if they have issues with the way it looks. My hood is 42 inches wide

I would have a metal shop fabricate a cover for this that died into the ceiling.

You can probably do something as simple as having them fabricate a U shaped piece with the edges bent in at 90 degrees and double stick tape it to the wall. Or square off the corners and still run it up to the ceiling.

thank you. i was going to have a different fabricator make it for me, but in the end, they can't exactly match the stainless steel which is what was my concern from the beginning, but the HVAC sub had assured me that they could get very close when I initially decided to go this route. I just don't want to spend $1000+ for a "custom" stainless steel duct cover that wasn't going to look great in the end because the finish wasn't a really good match, even if they could install this without the screws showing. So I think I'm going to go with a custom hood cover made from wood which will get painted or plastered/sealed

I have a similar problem...my 10" duct is off by 3" or so due to attic constraints. I'm toying with the idea of a drywall soffit to enclosed the duct and taper it back towards the wall. The Viking Chimney soffit would then tie into the "false ceiling." It's not a perfect solution but I've seen a picture of it and it seems to work ok. I really want my "chimney" to go all the way to the ceiling but I have to compromise. Would like to see a picture of your solution...

I have seen lots of duct cover extensions made by different hood companies- they are usually pretty simple. You may want to check that out rather than having something custom made. The hood that I bought came with enough duct cover to reach an 8-9ft ceiling, but I would have had to order an extension for anything higher. I think that would have been $100ish? (but only for a few feet) I guess if you want a true box, without telescoping segments, you might have to go custom. From the SS prices I saw for countertops and backsplashes, I'd guess $800.

I can only guess that the old hood was installed after the house was built unless the original builders simply installed the hood and ducting that way. I find it odd that that layer of insulation and the blown in insulation have shown no evidence of grease/mold/moisture at all over all those years. That 's the only thing that made me think maybe it was somehow a properly setup way of venting. I may run it in recirculation mode until I get ducts vented outside. My home warranty is supposed to cover duct work. What are your opinions on the effectiveness of recirculation mode for microwaves? This one has two grease filters on bottom and a PureAir carbon filter which I believe is on the inside upper front of the microwave. It's a Frigidaire Gallery model... can this helpl a great deal with reducing smoke and odor in the home?

Heh! Yes, mattress is a very good example. This is why ca. 2007 I started reading up on kitchen ventilation so I could ignore the magic that was being asserted and determine for myself what was needed. In a hood, most of the effectiveness is embedded in the sheetmetal shapes and the blower motor and fan. I rarely hear of fan failures (I can only recall one on this forum). Broan absorbed NuTone that used to provide a lifetime guarantee. Wolf uses Broan. If the hood exterior is non-magnetic stainless steel, it shouldn't ever rust or develop surface staining. What tends to fail in lower quality hoods are fan and light switches. These hoods may have thinner sheet metal, but that is not a point of failure. It might have a relationship with rattles. Mean time to failure with electronics will typically decrease with increased parts count. So some risk of shorter lifetime may be present where fancy motor control circuits are in use. It is fine to go shopping and look at hoods from the point of view of ease of use or lighting or construction quality, or aesthetics of design, but nothing should be purchased until you have gone through the process of understanding what you need a hood system to do and what its parameters have to be to achieve it. Plastering and sealing and covering thats a lot of work and it will get expensive too. But you are right custom made vent is even more expensive and what the use if it does not serve the purpose.

I think boxing the vent is going to look the best. Here is Boxing in a Hood Fan Exhaust Duct video to give you some ideas.

Wayfair sells hood duct covers in stainless steel. It is difficult to tell if it would match your hood. It is something to investigate if you like the look.

I highly doubt you need to have the decorative shroud in place for your final inspection, you will need the duct connected and sealed... I'd be surprised if an HVAC company has the finesse to brake steel but they may, I would have gone to a metal fabricator. All ready made shrouds use a bracket at the ceiling with two screws to hold the shroud up, you don't even see them once installed...
