A Hardworking Scullery Covered in Stainless Steel
This secondary kitchen in Maryland is a glossy, commercial-grade affair that’s easy to clean
After expanding their 100-year-old Annapolis, Maryland, home to include a spacious new kitchen fit for everyday use and entertaining, these homeowners found themselves wondering what to do with their old kitchen. With the pressure of designing the main kitchen off, they thought, why not have a little fun with the secondary space? After all, this would be an out-of-sight kitchen that the homeowners would use during parties to prep, cook and clean up after meals, to keep the main kitchen from looking messy.
To fabricate the custom kitchen, including stainless backsplashes spanning from steel counter to steel cabinets, Cherry called on Joe Wilde of Kitchen Concepts Plus, who coordinated with a custom commercial stainless shop to bring the design to fruition.
While many sculleries don’t have a stove, this one does. It comes in handy during holidays and large parties, as does the warming shelf above the range, which is great for keeping the house specialty — roasted vegetables with balsamic vinegar and pasta — from getting cold.

A commercial pot filler comes in handy for filling and rinsing large pots over the spacious sink. The top three drawers shown here house many cooking utensils, while the larger bottom drawer holds bigger items such as pots and pans.

They turned to Cathy Purple Cherry and came up with a plan to create a sleek, chic, get-it-done secondary kitchen, or scullery, ensconced in stainless steel, from the cabinets to the countertops and right down to the electrical socket covers. “Steel is generally easy to clean, and the homeowners liked the edginess of it, especially since the working kitchen backs up to the entertainment kitchen,” Cherry says. “It provides a nice balance.”
