Things we've been up to lately....
Comments (20)Misty is definitely not keen on her 'treads'! That picture was the funniest and may eventually end up in a frame. When we first put the booties on, we put them on her first and then put our winter coats on. I went to close the closet door and it didn't close properly. When I looked down to see what the problem was, this is what I saw: The kitchen is usually NOT neat :-) In the original house, where the kitchen table is now was the dining portion of an L shaped living room/dining room. There was a window where you can see the doorway on the right side behind the chair and the main kitchen window looking into the backyard started above where you can see the dishwasher by the stove. The addition we put on runs behind that side, so the window to the right of the table became the doorway to the pantry and the window above the dishwasher and sink is an opening looking into the living room. The original living room became the dining room after we put up the wall - and doorway to the dining room - on the left side of the table. That left a long, narrow kitchen that would have had no windows! So the window you see there now had to be knocked through the outer wall as part of the renovation. That gave it a nice wide windowsill that is perfect for plants! There are counters and cabinets on both sides of the kitchen, with the counters on the left side being short - 30" tall - and the ones on the right 36" tall. The shorter counter makes it easy for me to sit to work at the counter if need be. There are sinks on both sides too - as well as one in the pantry. And there is a fridge in both the kitchen and the pantry. The pantry has a long counter on one side with no base cabinets to make it really easy to use that surface as a work space - that's where I did all the drawing work for the course I took last winter. When I planned the kitchen, my intent was to make it as efficient and usable as possible for as long as possible given the many unknowns about where my health issues will go. So far it's worked quite well. We did think, when we moved in, 'At last, lots of storage space in the kitchen' but we could still use more space....:-) One of the odd things in the kitchen is that the floor is uneven just about where the picture starts. The old stairs to the basement went down under the cabinets at the entrance to the kitchen. The new stairs go down outside the kitchen and, when the old stairway was filled in with new joists, it became very obvious that the original house had sunk on one side because the joists would not meet on the level! So there's a funny dip in the kitchen floor......See MoreOur Pond
Comments (12)Why thank you, Digger! If it wasn't for the pond forum, my husband and I would never have dreamed we could take a project like this on. We've learned huge amounts from the observations of the ponders who've shared their joys and heartaches here. It's a fabulous resource. Karen, there were days when I really felt overwhelmed and wondered if we'd *ever* get it done. As to its size, one of the things I read over and over here at the forum was that folks always felt they made their first ponds too small, so this pond is 23' long and at its widest it's 14' across. The deep end is just over 4 feet, the shallow end is 2 feet. No fish right now. I wanted to spend the first season just learning how to get the water stable. Lots of life in the pond, though--endless tadpoles, plus salamanders have bred in it. It's great to be able to watch salamanders. I'm thinking that when I do get fish I'll go with shubunkins--the beauty of koi, but a tougher fish. We have 25 acres, but have only cleared one acre and will stop there. A significant hunk of this valley has been bought by the Nature Conservancy to create a green corridor for wildlife between Quebec and Vermont. When Paul and I moved here (he grew up in this valley, but I'm a city girl) there wasn't the wildlife we see now--lots of deer, wild turkeys, some moose and now a bear. Not so thrilled by the bear which was cheeky enough to walk up on to our front porch three weeks ago. I'm still in shock over that one. I cracked up when you said you'd asked your husband to toss you under the pond liner when the day comes. Too funny :) Have you posted pictures of your yard here? If you have, could you point me to them? I'm always looking for inspiration :)...See MoreBest friend lost her uncle - Need Exterior Ideas on his home
Comments (26)thanks everyone. I apologize for not leaving other details beforehand. my friends family has full access of the home. and has been maintaining the proper in the meantime as they have worked thru probate for other assets. the home was in trust, and thus will be sold that way and then distributed based on their uncles wishes in his LT. unfortunately, his health has been bad for over a decade and though everyone tried, the inside of his home is filled unfathomable amount of things, boxes, etc. The family is in the process of hiring a company that will take possession of any belongings they want to purchase otherwise the rest will go to a non-profit for veterans getting back on their feet. my friends father is a pastor and he and his wife are the simplest and most humble people I know. But like some of us, clearly if and when someone passes, its 2 full time jobs trying to figure things out and put all the pieces together. the home has power and full use. so all these suggestions are easily possible. as for me trying to do too much, I'm just circling the world of ideas from a great consulting community like all of you from HOUZZ, because there are some things that will be done to the inside and I just want to make sure that if needed, no ideas arent thrown on the table for the outside. I clearly will not do anything that isnt driven by the family or in the best interest of the home, family, etc. and I also understand that you can look at it in tiers of cost like was mentioned above with 3 different categories. my friend is going to sit with her folks tomorrow or Friday so I was just measily trying to other some thought when I know that they don't have the time to think thru all this. so I appreciate everyone's comments. I really do and all will shared....See MoreHis and Her closet Dilemma
Comments (13)SO you each have a 7' x 13' closet? Outside a luxury sized bath? And more closets, un needed upstairs? You have a SPACE issue? Honey, I doubt it. You simply need to put OUT of season, upstairs. in season near the bath. Then call a California closet, or a Loews. ( yes.... they can do a nice job ) and together, with an ASSESSMENT of your cloting......sports, dress, folded, hanging, shoes, accessories, scarves, belts bags et ALLLLLLLL, You decide how you want to out fit the space. Thart's the shortest route, because clolthes are personal. If you tend a farm, your closet doesn't look like someone working o n Wall Street. The clothes required are different. If you can't find room for grooming and bath supplies in that bathroom? You need a major purge of who knows what : Maybe you need a make up table under that window. Only you know. Only you know your clothes. Maybe you're Sarah Jessica Parker, and maybe you aren't : ) You must "suggest....you" Lighting is dependent on ceiling height, and needs to be ether recessed or flush mount...See MoreJilly
