Getting ready to plant some bareroot hybrid tea roses zone 6a

I have a large raised bed and the soil is all store bought Scotts Garden soil. What would you add to it for planting my roses? I have three 25 lb bags of chicken manure. Would you mix any of this with the planting soil?

What else would you add?

Its always a dilemma how to amend our soil. It is a matter of preference and balance.

First look at the label for your Scott’s Garden Soil. You need to know what ingredients are in the soil and how much “added fertilizer does it have, if any? Most soils now have added fertilizer. How many months does label say fertizer in soil lasts? Most soils have “light fertilizer in them... not too much nitrogen or potassium or phosphorus. So you can add a little chicken manure for fertilizer , too.

I need to check online to see the rose formula for Nitrogen-Potassium-phosphorus. Roses need a small percentage of each. One needs to be especially careful to not add too much nitrogen. Please check online to get correct percentages for fertilizer for roses.

Chicken manure is high in nitrogen so I know you are supposed to not use too much on roses... but people like to use it. (I use cow manure, lower in nitrogen.)

I would advise to research internet to see how much chicken manure to add to your soil.

To really know exactly how much fertizer to add you would need to test your soil.

I am going to add cow manure to my clay soil and a little Miracle Gro soil, too. I am just going to be careful to add a little.

Too much nitrogen or fertilizers burn plants.

Have fun! if all your frosts are past you may plant. I am zone 6, but I won’t plant until first or second week in April when I’m sure it’s steady 40-60 degrees, which is considered best.

FWIW, I was coached by Rachel at Palatine Roses to NOT amend the soil at all when planting new bare root roses. I used to lose bare roots to the "black finger of death" where the canes simply died off a few weeks after planting. Rachel said she'd never plant bare roots in the amended soil as I did with compost and alfalfa mixed into the soil, much less any artificial fertilizers. I listened to her advice (as I'm an occasionally sensible rosarian) and I had MUCH better bare root survival for the past two years planting into entirely unamended soil.

Other folks may supplement their bare root plantings without trouble, but it caused me no end of grief for years. I also can't supplement large potted roses, but my small bands and gallon roses love it. I guess the own root roses appreciate the extra nutrition, or maybe it's the young roses, but I haven't found it makes bare root roses very happy.

Ani, leaves harbor pest eggs and disease spores. By removing the leaves you open the canes up so they can be sprayed with the Neem or a dormant oil spray. It really has nothing to do with hardiness or root growth, just the general health of the plant. Roses in our local climate start to drop their oldest leaves as a natural growth cycle. By removing the leaves, we're doing what nature is going to do for us anyway. The only spray I use in my garden is one round of Volck's Dormant Oil spray after I prune in January. When using any oil-based spray, the temperature has to be under 60F, including reflected heat coming off block walls, so it can be tough getting even one round sprayed. The dormant oil spray helps to suffocate eggs and spores and should only be sprayed when the roses have no leaves. Because I often have roses from other people's yards come through mine for raffles or trades, I'm also trying to keep a disease called San Jose Scale out of my garden. Some great nurseries to purchase roses from in the metro-Phoenix area are Berridges, 4600 block E Camelback, Bakers, 40th Str & Osborn and Harpers, Hayden, south of Thomas. These aren't the only nurseries, of course, but they're well-known for quality roses and knowledge of rose culture.

Yes, and I'm not looking forward to it. But last year and the year before we got down that low -- even a touch lower, as I recall a night or two each year that dipped just below 0F -- and only two died outright. Those were 'Jaune Desprez' and "Secret Garden Musk Climber" after Winter 2013-2014. I replaced SGMC with a gallon-sized plant, and that one survived Winter 2014-2015. I gave up on the pipe dream of having a Tea-Noisette growing out in the open on my dying Japanese maple, and stuck 'Baltimore Belle' there instead. Many things had damage, but rebounded after I cut out the dead bits. Of course, the ones with little or no damage were the OGRs with little or no China/Tea in them. But even "Bermuda Spice", which had to be cut back to under 12" inches the last two Springs, rebounded to about 5' X 5' by the end of each season. I was hoping to see what it does when starting Spring with something more like 3', but this weekend may keep that from happening. Meanwhile, my potted roses look frozen in time -- few leaves dropped, but no active growth, and no discernible damage. They're hanging out in my enclosed unheated back porch, getting some sun from the windows. This cold blast is an anomaly this year, coming as a brief interruption in otherwise mild weather. I'm hoping that such a short dose of intense cold followed by temperatures in the 50s a few days later won't kill anything. The Chinas and China-Teas I planted in the ground in 2015 are mostly in a protected spot against the house and facing south. The few I put in my tiny front yard are a bit more exposed, but I planted them deeply. We'll see in just another month or so, when I start pruning. Being a zone-pusher, I realize I take risks -- but how else do we learn? And frankly, considering the more tender Chinas and Teas keep blooming through our hot and humid Summers, they're worth it. :-) ~Christopher

@Ann Marie, I have a few climbers and ramblers on a trellis and my best advice is to make sure your rose is hardy for your climate by choosing ones that are atleast one or two hardiness zones below yours. That’s the best way to ensure cane survival through winter (right plant, right place). If the rose is near a wall that retains and reflect heat, then I do zone push and have had success with climbers my zone or one zone above. For example, I’m in zone 4b and I have no problems with New Dawn and James Galway surviving winter without protection on a northwest and southwest wall, respectively. As for training the rose, my approach is to tie the canes tight against the support so that it is secure and doesn’t whip around or rub. I do this in the late winter / early spring when the rose is dormant along with pruning so that I can see the rose’s framework. It also means that I’m working with only hardened canes (I never tie soft or semi-hard canes). I use simple garden twine and tie tight double knots. I don’t skimp and make sure the final rose frame work absolutely does not move. I tie the largest, most established canes to the support first, then the rest. I may even tie smaller canes to the bigger ones. Yes, it’s “crossing branches” but so long as they are tied tight and not rubbing, I find it’s totally fine. Key is no movement of any of those framework canes. I intentionally use twine because it blends in, is cheap, and will eventually degrade (since I do this all over again every winter/spring). If the rose cane is really old and has a tough bark and I know it’s not going to expand, then I tie into the support with black zip ties (gasp!). I’ll also mention that optimal blooms form on canes that are positioned between horizontal and 45 degrees. Here’s a pic of my William Baffin climber last year on a wooden trellis.

Geez. . .so many! I'm overwhelmed now, lol. Looking at Palantine. ANyone have any suggestions to narrow it down a bit? haha! Wow. This will take me forever to choose. I definitely have one dead one to replace so I can stick a smallish shrub rose there (it's in amongst an Alexander Mackenzie and 2 Martin Frobishers, so . .they will get quite large.) And I have a small spot at the front that I was thinking maybe just a tea rose .. And another one I think is dead . .again probably small shrub there. Need to go out this morning and check a few others that I think are being taken over by rootstock. What on earth happened in my garden this year???!!! Geez.

Cynthia, this is a very interesting observation! As a cold-zone gardener, I read your posts very attentively, and I was sort of expecting to see this dying off at some point! I don't amend the soil, only add some compost on the top (but for older roses, not those newly planted) and so far so good! All my bare-root roses are on multiflora as well. And yes, it is also interesting if a different rootstock would make change.
