Nyssa sylvatica Wildfire branching

Is this branching okay ? This is three different branches and there are more on my wildfire black gum. Is this a trait sometimes seen in black gums that is acceptable or should I be trimming one off of each branch ?

based on the staking.. it looks like a new transplant ...

if so.. no canopy pruning for at least a year or two ...

you need to grow a root mass to get the tree established ... and every leaf is an energy making machine.. so do go cutting any off for now ...

tree time i counted in decades ... what your hurry with this one ...

how about a pic fop the whole plant ...

there is what you 'can' do ... then what you 'should' do.. and then.. then 'when' you should do it ... applying such ... yeah.. you can ... should you.. meh.. maybe ... when.. in a year or two ...

and to be clear.. once established.. and you have a little more experience with this plant.. yes.. it would be very simple to snip them off when they are this small ... and the roots will be all set.. and the plant established.. so knock yourself out ..

Hi all, I found this to be a rather pertinent topic for me. I had planted a 2" caliper Nyssa Sylvatica last June, and it did alright last summer. Now, after the brutal winter we had, this tree has not leafed out yet (here in north central MA). I did some test twig cuts, with unfortunately some dead, and the other cuts showed some pale greenish-yellow twig centers... I'm nervous, and wondering if this tree has died? The buds haven't really filled out yet... May7th. eek. Fortunately, My American Sycamore hasn't leafed out yet either, and usually won't until another 2 weeks from now, which is usually my last tree to leaf out. Is there still hope for my Tupelo?

My Wildfire has been in the ground 4 years in Zone 6 and it is gorgeous! I love everything about it. The incredible red new growth, which is brightest in Spring and early Summer but persists a bit subtler into at least Late July. The shiny leaves. The fabulous Fall color. The pretty form of the tree in Winter. My Wildfire was ca. 2.5“ caliper when planted into my very well draining, acidic soil. The Spring buds are brown right up to when they open, so I wonder if Tigertoo1’s tree was actually fine?

Ken - You're right in that I'm concerned about the food, maybe a bit too focused. They don't just eat fruit, seeds, etc., but also insects, which come with plants in general. tete - The trunks are thin and my understanding is the Nyssa Sylvatica will grow a deep taproot. I believe the problem, if root bound, can be handled when planting and some TLC the first year. No no worries about black spot on the species in humid climates? I guess it is more of an asthetic thing any way. There doesn't seem to be much concern about the pollination distance, so that's nice to hear. I understand a female will have atleast some fruit regardless. Just trying to maximize, if it is going to be there, it would be nice to have fruit. Man oh man, those things have some fantastic fall color!

Sara - good question on the pollen vs nectar. Except those small twiggy ones aren't going to become large branches later. And in the meantime are helping the tree feed itself.

Just think, the tree needs those branches now but everyone below your hip level and in most yards, every branch below head level will be removed naturally or through purining.

I would say not to cut any of the double branches off because I believe this is the natural way black gums tree grow. Mine have the same branching structure. Beside a new one will grow right back in the same spot. Don't ask me how I know.

The only thing I’d cut is that stake tie. Appears to be a bit tight.
