Cultured Marble vs onyx collection vs solid surface shower pan
Comments (78)Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Good luck with your project....See MorePorcelain "Carrara marble" look-alike tile?
Comments (51)Do you have a sample of the Silestone Lagoon to look at with your tile. I think you are right that it might look slightly off but it's hard to know with out seeing it in person. I also think it might be difficult to find a solid white countertop that will play well with both the white in the tile and your white countertops. Maybe you should concierge a light to medium tone gray countertop. It will provide a little contrast and keep your room from looking too white (unless that is the look you want). I think it would look better not to have too much movement in the countertop since the porcelain carrara tile has lots of movement. I posted a picture earlier in this thread showing the Carrara look alike tile my daughter used in her bathroom. She opted for light gray cabinets and initially wanted a white countertop. She shopped remnants for her countertop and was not able to find something that didn't "look slightly off". She ended up using a black quartz that had some lighter speckles in it. She thought it looked better than a solid color. Perhaps you could find a grey with some flecks of dark grey, black or white in it. I've posted many pics of my daughter's bathroom on this forum but here's a few shots for you so you can see how contrasting colors work Since you probably don't want to go with black, maybe something like Silestones Ocean Jasper Or Moonstone Would work for you. If your not limited to Silestone Cambria has some options that might work too. Snowdown White Greystone Good look with your search for the right countertop....See Morebath remodel: help me choose my marble accent tile
Comments (8)Thanks for your response and feedback! I was looking through some books on Green and Green homes and they had subway tiles and ceramic hex floors. To me the hex floor felt busy. I put a marble mosaic in my master. Here's what I did with 12" x 12" tiles around the outside which helped break up the 12" x 12" a bit. And I ran the mosaic in the floor of the shower too. Here's my shower. Mine is mostly enclosed with just a glass door. If you like daisies, this is what I did in my upstairs guest bath although the pattern is a bit earlier than a 1940's bungalow (I was going for an early 1920's feel although as you can see with the above master, I didn't quite keep the look): We do have square tiles in the guest bath. I guess I was trying to do a bit of a riff on the traditional look. Maybe it's not working. Thanks for the dope-slap on the daisy tile. (shoot, now I want to delete the comments on the daisy tiles but it's too late!) No don't feel bad about the daisy tile. Secret? Our house is a brand new built craftsman inspired house. One that several folks thought was an original I renovated so I must have done one or 2 things right. LOL. However, I got seduced by the same tile as you! I love that tile and a few of the other water jet patterns Do you think any of this could work? The 12x12 floor? I think you could get away with the 12" x 12" if you keep the other tile more in tune with an older style. I apologize as I think I was reacting even more to the 4 x 8 and the 12" x 12" tile laid on the diagonal. I thought the 4x8 subway was at least in keeping in the proportion of the older ones. No. That is the one that really is off. If you're going for an older look than 1940's, then stick with a 3" x 6" subway. However if you want to stick to the house era, go with a 4" x 4". To take it from the ordinary, what about playing with them by doing a half offset similar to a subway tile? Is it possible to add a marble accent that would be in keeping w/ the style? The basketweave, wicker weave and spiral mosaic I believe have been around forever. Check out Subway Mosaics too. This is the company I ordered my daisy floor from. They have different sized marble tiles too....See MoreHelp please: Marble vs. Porcelain looking marble
Comments (19)Marble is a higher end look and a luxury finish that almost all luxury projects receive. I specify marble for all of my high end clients and this is what they expect. Initially, it will need to be sealed several times, possibly 10-15 times for some white marbles! You can opt to use an epoxy grout, which is used in restaurants, to help avoid having to maintain that along with the marble. Then you will need to clean and seal the marble again every 6 months to a year. It is very easy to do on your own with a little time and care. If you are uncomfortable with the long term maintenance of marble, then there are now some decent porcelian tiles out there for consideration but you will have to have a contrasting countertop material. There are large format porcelain tiles that can be used as tile and matching on counters but they are much more expensive in labor to fabricate and the edge often won’t appear as realistic. It can chip and is more difficult to repair than marble or solid surface. Marble can be filled with epoxy and it can be custom colored to match any varation in color or veining. Even with all the hype about low maintenance porcelain tile, I still chose marble for my own home, and that includes white marble kitchen countertops also! I absolutley love walking into my kitchen every morning....See MoreHelen
