One of my favorites is Olivia Austin.

She is healthy and blooms her head off. I have actually never cut roses from her to bring inside so I have no idea about vase life.

Take a good look at Belinda's Blush. Everything you want plus almost thorn less.

I am a sucker for the pastel colors, but maybe I need to expand my horizons? I love a nice, fluffy English garden style rose, but I was under the impression they're not the best as cuts.

Please note that what is perfect for me could be a complete disaster for you. Julia Child is my best rose here but I've heard others say it was terrible for them. For me it grows vigorously, winters like a trouper, blooms almost continuously and rarely black spots. It is a bright yellow that fades to pale yellow, is self cleaning and has a rich fragrance.

Probably not enough sun in that location. There are a few roses that will tolerate some shade. But in reality, none truly thrive.

Another beauty with big fluffy blooms is Celestial Night.

That's a good question Folkertsk2 , I 've been wondering the same thing for over 20 years. I presently have 9 after going through around a hundred vintage and modern roses through the years , it's been a thorny path of expensive mistakes.

My collection all possess qualities I love , but I have not found perfection rolled into one. There is a good chance you can be sublimely happy to find a couple of near perfect roses . I would see what High Country Roses , Antique Rose Emporium and Rose Petals nursery have that grabs you, they have beautiful photos and descriptions that give you a feel for what to expect. From there you can research and ask the forum members in your zone of their own experience with your choices.

Sorry I don't have a rose in mind for you, I am zone five and my top rose is David Austin's Evelyn.

A few thoughts: 1) sunrise to noon isn't really very shady if it will get full sun that entire time. Morning sun only is not bad. 2) If you are going to sell these flowers I'd be careful with David Austin roses and similar -- I remember being delighted to find a bunch of David Austin roses for sale at a farmers' market years and years ago, before I had space to grow them myself. They lasted about a day and I had a bit of a grudge against that flower seller after that. If you like old fashioned looking roses and you want to cut them look at what other professional growers are selling in that vein and try one of those varieties. If you don't have to make money from this bush and you just want cut flowers for friends and your own house then I'd suggest you try whatever you love in that spot. 3) If you are really worried about how much shade it will get just plant something that will love it there, perhaps a slightly shade-tolerant rose like a hybrid musk. You say it is a big space -- if you have a spot for a huge climber look at Madame Alfred Carriere -- she ticks a lot of your boxes, though not all. I have a Lady Hillingdon in a spot where she only gets about half a day of sun and I think she is doing OK with that -- some roses actually look nicer if they don't get too bleached out by hot afternoon sun. K S, thank you for suggesting I check out some hybrid musks! I already have an order from Roses Unlimited coming end of April, so I checked what they carry, and there’s some really beautiful options (I’m leaning towards Felicia). I’m going to try to add one to my order!

I’ve only been growing roses for about 3 years (Colette was my first, and then I’ve added more each spring), so maybe in a few more years I’ll have enough experience and knowledge to help others on this forum! Thanks again!

Folker: not sure what area you’re in but here are some that do well in my area. Some to consider: Bolero... all around perfect roses for me. It’s not a fast grower... but loves to bloom.

If you have a large enough space I love White Eden and Eden roses... tons of blooms for arrangements.

Diane: mine is now about 4x4. Larger than it’s description. I never have to prune it because it’s so slow growing... and naturally grows into a nice rounded form. I just dead head.

Some others to consider... Francis Meilland... and Easy Spirit. Blooms last a long time. I don’t currently have Francis Meilland but want to add it... but here my Easy Spirit.

If you’re into striking Magenta Pink... I love Pretty Lady... if you want longer stems... maybe Grande Dame which is similar to Pretty Lady. Others in the color with lasting blooms... Yves Piaget... Beautiful pics! I planted Bolero last spring, I hope it looks as good as yours someday! I was considering Francis Meilland, but wasn’t sure about the less-than-full sun factor. A reviewer on Heirloom mentions having a lot of success growing Eden in morning sun/afternoon shade, so that could maybe work. I never thought of pegging a climbing rose in that spot, so thanks for suggesting it!

I can't comment on how Eden will do with afternoon shade (mine has full sun, all day, and loves it) but it does make a fantastic cut flower. No fragrance for me.

Years ago, I had 2 bushes of Gruss an Aachen and it did extremely well in the shade. I think sometimes in the description of this rose it mentions that is performs it the shade.

I think Dee-lish should suit your requirement. Mine is on east side and gets only morning sun too, yet it still keeps blooming. Good for cut flower with strong fragrance. I'm in Seattle 8b.

As Seil said what works in our gardens may not work in yours..... that said one that meets your requirements at least for me is Medallion.

When you say you want something that can go right up next to your house..... and gets a lot of shade *yours is afternoon* mine was morning.....

When my husband and I bought our office building I built a little rock retaining wall right over the asphalt next to the building - It is only 3 feet wide and I filled it with dirt * This is on the west side of my office. It dose not get sun until one or two depending on the time of year.... I did everything wrong.... afternoon sun, not morning.... blazing hot parking lot.... white building.... not good drainage..... etc. etc. etc.... including wrong rootstock for my area.....

However, this rose is 24 years old.... and performs wonderfully. It has medium fragrance.... better at certain times of day and year..... The flowers are HUGE.... I can get a 7 or 8 inch at times.... but normally at least 5 or 6. The plant gets about 6 ft tall (could get taller, but I am always cutting back) and four to 5 feet wide. My bush leans out to get the sun... and probably because he did not like being to cramped next to the wall.... The plant is relatively healthy.... no real diseases.... I do spray .... or did.... a couple of years ago my husband and I were hit from behind. He had to have major surgery on both his neck and lower back... so we started started working out of the house... then Covid hit and we continued working out of house... and the poor plant was neglected... No extra water.... No fertilizer.... No Spray. We have just started going back to the office. I cut back gave him some fertilizer and he is already blooming.... I can't praise him enough....

This rose is PERFECT for the spot I have it.... the only bad thing about it is that when people walk by my office is that they come in to ask what it is.... I am supposed to be working.... though I can chat for an hour about it.... hubby doesn't like that when I am supposed to be working... LOL.

Now for the bad news.... I have tried this rose at my home.... and it doesn't perform nearly as well..... In fact I have lost it a couple of times..... The one at the office is on Dr. Huey..... the ones at my home were on fortuniana root stock and/or own root. The ones at home get morning sun til about two or three in afternoon.... So what gives .... why is the one at the office doing so well and the ones at the home not..... I think it is for two reasons.... but this is just a guess.... I think the one at the office even though it doesn't have the best of drainage... is not getting TOO much water. IT has an awning over it.... The ones at my home gets TONS of water coming off of my roof.... I am in Florida zone 10 and it is not uncommon to get 3 to 4 inches of rain in an hour.... day after day in the summer.... And I have been told that fortuniana root roses can drown easier than other roses.... And the other problem I have with this rose is the salt air.... I live on the IntraCostal.... when we get heavy winds this rose gets burnt looking leaves.... where my other roses not as much.... Geoff Coolidge of Cool roses believes it is due to this rose not tolerating salt as much as the others..... The one at my office does not get any salt.... so that could be the main reason and not the rain.... I do LOVE this rose..... and I plan on trying him at the house again.... This time in a pot....
