Hypothetical siding - Board and Batten
Comments (37)Installing vinyl board and batten on my ranch house. Have reached the gable side of the house which is taller than the 10 foot B & B panel. I want to continue the B & B all the way up to the gable with a horizontal piece going across the house to make the bottom of the triangle. What is used to do that horizontal piece and should the siding at the upper level stick out beyond the siding on the lower level or does that horizontal piece act like a drip line out over the lower level of B & B. I am working with a carpenter friend/handyman and he wants to be sure he does it the right way since this is a first for him. Too dark to take a pic now, but I can add one later if needed. Thanks. Comments (4)I would agree with MSDG; the Hardie board and batten system is hard to beat if your going to paint and not stain. Cedar & clear redwood sidings will be the most expensive to install and maintain. Your next options would be paint grade material like Advantage (finger-jointed pine that is treated for rot and insects) which is also a good choice but I'm not sure what would be available in your area. I've also seen decent results with resawn plywood install directly over the exterior ply or OSB. The framing needs to be clean and flat but with thoughtful layout to keep the battens symetrical it can be very cost effective and clean with good primer and paint. did I say the Cedar and RW would be very expensive......See MoreBoard and batten siding - material choice
Comments (7)Lots and lots of options. First, real planks and battens using cedar. Second, panelized materials starting with plywood with applied wood battens, and moving into artificial materials. You will need to carefully design what is to be used, since there may be the need for one or more horizontal joints, give the height of your exterior wall. It all depends on the maximum height of the materials to be used. For example, plywood panels generally come in 8, 9 or 10-foot lengths. Horizontal joints are flashed with "Z" flashing to keep the water out. The "Z" flashing may be left exposed (I personally don't like it when B&B is used) or covered with a horizontal "batten" which matches the vertical battens or is another dimension. That's why the location and placement is a significant design issue....See MoreExterior siding/batten and board mishap by builder - seeking solutions
Comments (27)Not sure if this is helpful at this point, and how the sider can even make design decisions instead of the homeowners. But, there are some inconsistencies with the design language on the whole house, maybe picking one might help solve the garage conundrum: - In RED you have full gable returns on what is supposed to be the main focal point of the elevation massing, but not on the garage front or back of garage. In PINK is horizontal siding under these. - In BLUE the gable end eave is different on the garage and Great Room, in part because the band height in BLUE ARROWS differs (on the back I imagine was placed at that height because of the transom window, but doesn't carry around the sides). - In GREEN the front of garage has vertical battens, on back horizontal siding yet with the same gable representation as the front. If I were fixing this front garage elevation, I'd probably go with a full gable return and keep the blue horizontal siding....See MorePPF.
