Dining table protection?

We just got a new dining table and chairs.
It’s from Canadel, and the furniture person said it is coated for protection against spills but to protect it from heat/cold.

I am going to order a table pad but...I ABSOLUTELY hate tablecloths unless it’s a holiday.

So for every day, What should I use? Placements? Individual cloth trivets?

My previous table was from Pottery Barn, and it was distressed (and second-hand ) so we didn’t baby it.

I've turn to grandma decor when it comes to tables. I love seeing the pretty wood but don't want to drag out place mats or tablecloths every time I use the table. I got clear plastic tablecloths for my table at camp and at home. I used the vinyl from the fabric dept at Walmart. 3 yards for $10, you can't beat the price. For hot stuff I use trivets.

Won’t the pad cover the table top?

I got. Lucite clear placemats from Amazon. They are completely invisible so don’t detract from the table

Anything hot would be placed on some form of trivet - there are all styles ranging from utilitarian to very decorative. Unless you are placing a pots or other cookware directly on the table (e.g. very hot) any normal surface is fine - a nice padded placemat will do. Typically I would put all serving stuff on mats even if not hot.

I also have place mats stored by the table which are used for *intensive* meals but for ordinary type of eating, the lucite placemats are completely sufficient.

I don't understand how a vinyl tablecloth could be more attractive than other types of protective coverings - nice placemats which complement the decor of your home would be better.

What kind of usage will you have? Adults? Small children?

Since coasters are generally thin, there will always be a limit on how much liquid they can contain. I suggest using cocktail napkins in addition to the coaster if you're serving something that will have a lot of condensation. Or see if you can get away with less ice. You may be surprised at how well the poly holds up. I remember when poly meant thick and glossy, but we have a satin finish table that looks unfinished unless you either feel the surface or catch the light at the right angle, and it's amazingly resistant.

I had this same problem a couple of weeks ago on a dining table we received from a relative. The top was partially discolored (it looked like the original protective covering had been partially worn away). I was hesitant about sanding it but I was refinishing a couple of smaller tables at the same time, so I figured what the heck. I got some fine grit sandpaper and lightly started sanding a small section, just to see what would happen. The old finish came off pretty easily and it was kind of gummy little balls (I had to change paper often). I went ahead and sanded the whole surface and then applied a polyurethane clear coat (3 coats). The table looks really good now. I think as long as there is no stain in your table, you should be able to sand it down no problem.

I haven't used carpet on top of carpet, but I certainly see it a lot any more...a decorating 'fashion' statement. I've vacuumed at my SILs though, and I don't like to fuss with the edge around the area carpet placed on the wall-to-wall - so chose not to do that here in my living or dining rooms which have off white wall to wall carpet. If you are interested in trying it without investing lots, several on the home decorating forum here have suggested esalerugs.com. That company was new to me but most seem to have been pleased. At the recommendation from posters there, I've just now ordered poly runners that have the look of oriental rugs for the hallway through my mudroom and the far end that leads outside to the patio. They are telling me can be hosed off if they get especially dirty....we'll see. The rugs aren't due to be delivered until mid week next week so I can't speak to their quality first hand.

Area rug on wall to wall carpet is acceptable. The Ikea option is great. Just make sure it is big enough for your table/chairs. To determine the right size, you will need to measure the amount of space the table + chairs take up. To do this properly, you will place the table and the chairs. Then you will pull out ALL THE CHAIRS as if people where about to sit down. The amount of space you NEED to pull out the chairs and then sit down is part of the equation. Once you have pulled out all the chairs, you will measure the length and the width of your set up. You will then add 3" - 6" to the length and the width...this is so it looks 'right' if the chairs are pulled out. Good. Now that you have done your homework, you will go out and find an area rug with those measurements (or something as close as possible...bigger is better than smaller).

I keep placemats in a drawer near the diningroom table.....and when I use it I pull out a mat. I have another round oak table in the family room and another piece of furniture with place mats. When the kids were growing up I had a table in a breakfast nook that was used for lunches, after school snacks and sometimes dinner when we were having adult company for dinner.
Train your family that nothing goes on any table without a coaster or a mat.
I can't imagine putting plastic on your beautiful new table...rather like covering your furniture with plastic.

Vinyl tablecloths are not the most stylish , but when a table is used for more than having a meal every day it serves the purpose . My tables have been or are used for playing games, virtual schooling, homework, playing with toys, crafts, sewing, cooling chocolate candy and other functions. Place mats aren't going to cut it all the time. Sure for entertaining the tablecloths comes out, but for every day the clear vinyl tablecloth works great.
