Protecting the carpet under dining table

We will be getting carpet put in our living room, which all connects with the "dining room" (more of a space off the kitchen that leads into the living room). The dining table is not huge or heavy, but can you recommend anyway to protect it, like maybe a rug?

I've also seen people use bamboo mats, but I'm afraid that the carpet would be too soft (pile height is medium .59 in) and then the bamboo mat could bend and splinter.

I do like this rug from Ikea and I wonder if it would be ok going under it:

"Conversely, a glass top would be more cumbersome, expensive, and could potentially damage the table (would need your help verifying this). " Why do you think so? Cumbersome? It just sits there. You really do not need to move it. Expensive? Mine was less than $75. Damage? I have had the same sheet of glass on my eat-in kitchen's butcher block table for almost 20 years. The table looks as good as the day we bought it. On the other hand... the dining room table with the pads? The pads are bulky and need a storage place when not in use; they cost several hundred dollars.

Looks like majority has rug under formal if room is large enough and no rug under kitchen table due to messy eaters. Funny, my old house had wood dining table on wood floor. I had to put felt under all the legs, then moved a few weeks later and had to remove the all because new house had carpet. Now I am removing the carpet and having to put the felt back on. But since I will most likely have a rug under there, I may only do the chairs in case the chairs get taken off rug for some reason. My room is large enough to have rug under table with about 2' of wood around edge of room still showing. My kitchen has no rug on wood floor. It is amazing how many crumbs my kids drop each week. I almost feel like putting a "splat" mat under there like they do for highchairs.

I haven't used carpet on top of carpet, but I certainly see it a lot any more...a decorating 'fashion' statement. I've vacuumed at my SILs though, and I don't like to fuss with the edge around the area carpet placed on the wall-to-wall - so chose not to do that here in my living or dining rooms which have off white wall to wall carpet. If you are interested in trying it without investing lots, several on the home decorating forum here have suggested esalerugs.com. That company was new to me but most seem to have been pleased. At the recommendation from posters there, I've just now ordered poly runners that have the look of oriental rugs for the hallway through my mudroom and the far end that leads outside to the patio. They are telling me can be hosed off if they get especially dirty....we'll see. The rugs aren't due to be delivered until mid week next week so I can't speak to their quality first hand.

Would you put a rug under a heavy dining table?

I have a rug under ours, about 9 x 13 in size. Our dining table is heavy too. Solid wood, heavily carved, double pedestal, seats ten. Takes a few good men to move it. There are wood floors in there, and with a wood table as well, the room needed the softening of a rug. It's a formal dining, though, so it's not like we eat in there every day, and then we don't have children, so we don't really have the worry of spills.

Area rug on wall to wall carpet is acceptable. The Ikea option is great. Just make sure it is big enough for your table/chairs. To determine the right size, you will need to measure the amount of space the table + chairs take up. To do this properly, you will place the table and the chairs. Then you will pull out ALL THE CHAIRS as if people where about to sit down. The amount of space you NEED to pull out the chairs and then sit down is part of the equation.

Once you have pulled out all the chairs, you will measure the length and the width of your set up. You will then add 3" - 6" to the length and the width...this is so it looks 'right' if the chairs are pulled out.

Good. Now that you have done your homework, you will go out and find an area rug with those measurements (or something as close as possible...bigger is better than smaller).

If you are getting an area rug to lay over carpet in the dining room, I suggest you get a rug with a pattern. It will add interest to the area and will hid possible food and drink spills.

Check out Chilewich floor mats , when they get dirty hose them off and really wall to wallcarpet is so yucky after awhile maybe plan on another type of flooring down the road.
