If it can't be folded I don't want it. Being retired, we don't require suits or dresses any more (yay!), so we can live with our very limited hanging space.

All of my t-shirts and shorts are folded, long sleeves and long pants are hung.....but that's the extent of my dress code....other than under ware which is also folded ;-)

I hang my fleece hooded jackets, fold my T-shirts, yoga pants & blue jeans. My cargo pants are hanging up, they're just easier to find that way.

It’s nice to get a different perspective, something that might really be obvious, but it just doesn’t occur to you.

All shirts except undershirts are hung up. Work pants are hung, jeans and shorts are folded.

Dresses, skirts, trousers, jackets/blazers are hung up. Athletic clothes, Tshirts, and sweaters are folded. Obviously all the "smalls" are folded, undies, socks, swimsuits, tights.

Slacks are hung, jeans and yoga pants are folded. Tees, pullovers, and short cardigans are folded, shirts and long cardigans are hung. Pajamas folded, robes on hooks. A year ago I really cleaned out the closet, KonMari style, but I need to do it again. But now that DH isn’t traveling, I can’t take over the bedroom with all the clothes!

As others have stated, I hang some things and fold others. Since I like to wear non-knit cotton shirts, I have more hanging than folded clothing.

I’d like to get away from using dressers/chests of drawers in the bedroom proper for clothes storage. Instead, I’d like to store everything in my closet, on-display, boutique-style, so I can see what my options are. (I tend to dig frantically for the things I‘m looking for when they’re in drawers, essentially ransacking my own home.)

I hang everything except underwear and socks. I have a large walk in closet so that's why.

First time I saw Marie Kondo ,started folding all my clothes. Enjoy keeping my clothes neat and folded. This time of year, not much too keep ; as it’s bathing suits all day long during warm weather.

almost everything I wear is folded. tshirts, shorts, sweats, pjs. I have a few things I hang - a few flannel shirts, 1 or 2 heavy sweatshirts. in a back bedroom I have a few coats and 2 or 3 nice outfits - in case I ever need them again, which I doubt will happen.

rob333, DH kept one suit and I kept one dress and one skirt. They're hanging up in the attic until needed, and might dry-rot in the meantime.

I live in jeans and T-shirts, tank tops in the hot summer months. Jeans are folded, tank tops are folded. Most of my T-shirts are hung, except for a few 'work' T's. Slacks, blouses, skirts, any 'dressy' clothes are hung.

Both. Jackets, a couple of skirts and dresses, blouses and casual tops (except knit T-shirts and workout tops), pants including jeans (except yoga and workout pants) and skorts are hung. I like the easier way I can see and compare what I need to wear. I keep any running and workout wear folded Kondo-style in clear bins in the closet so I can easily pull them out and get what I need. Shorts and other smalls are in a drawer in the bedroom. I also have a small drawer of ‘old stuff’ I relegate to wear while working in the yard.

I hang everything possible so that it is easy to see. I do not own a pair of jeans (hate them), but I do wear shorts more than any other kind of pants, and I do fold those and store them in drawers.

Most of what I store in drawers consists of underwear, sleepwear, and T-shirts, but I have more button shirts than T-shirts. I don't wear tank tops anymore, as I do not want exposure to the sun.

I do not change out clothes seasonally, and I wear winter style clothes only when I go up into the mountains. The rest of the time, I wear spring and summer clothes. I have extremely few winter clothes anyway, and so they do not take up much space.

I don't have a closet in my bedroom--just a wardrobe in the hall. And no closets downstairs--just a wardrobe in the pantry for jackets. Sigh. That's my answer to your question. :-)

Alisande, the charms of an older home, eh? My house was built in 1940 by a young bachelor. No closets or built-in storage on the first floor, and only two tiny half-height closets on the second. When he expanded the upstairs in the late 50's, the two new bedrooms each got a modest closet. I assume the family used chests and wardrobes for clothes. Coats? The man installed a bunch of coat hooks on the back landing (which we still use today), but his habit was to toss his jacket over the newel post as he headed upstairs. Contrast that to the house my grandparents built, same year and same social level, but my grandparents were a decade older, married with kids. Closets in every bedroom, coat closet near the front entry, and THREE BIG closets in the kitchen at the side entrance the family commonly used. I detect a woman's influence there, lol.

Yep! My house was built in 1918 and there is a walk-in closet because they added on. One closet, three bedrooms. 🙄

We're planning to build a closet with built-ins in the upstairs suite.

Leaving one bedroom. If I had to sell the house right now, I would stage it as an office (a plus during COVID), or as a nursery with cute furniture, not try to put a closet in in there.

I hang as much as I can. I'm not a fan of bedroom furniture such as dressers because they become a catch-all.

When house hunting, doesn't everyone have a list of non-negotiable features that either qualify or disqualify potential homes? Let's see - are there enough bedrooms, bathrooms of adequate size and function conveniently located, a fenced or fence-able yard for the dog and room for kids to play, a reasonably sized and equipped kitchen. Garage space for cars and storage space for other things? Is there adequate closet space?.

If something desired and needed isn't present but the place is chosen anyway, then I guess that compromise is made. But for something as essential as closet space, it's easy enough to find choices that will tick that box. Why settle for less?

Then you made a choice many wouldn't. But it was your choice to make.

Unless you plan to sell the house and cash out, how much it goes up doesn't matter because the appreciation is simply your ante to stay in the real estate market when or if you decide to sell and move elsewhere. Everything else went up too. That's why home ownership isn't an investment like other investments, it's simply the price of admission to the real estate market.

But I do plan to sell. Buy something paid off, closer to doctors and grocery stores in Nashville, when I can no longer drive in another 10+ years (or loads longer). I always improve the houses I live in.

I chose the right house at the right time, for the right price. My real estate broker tells me that all the time. I've been using her for 20 years. Buying and selling houses and we always do well. Unless my house gets flooded during the housing crash.

Rob: Real Estate is about location, location, location. You absolutely made the right choice, and did well. Almost everything is secondary to location, in hot areas people will snap up all kinds of properties and modify them, if the area of the property is what they were seeking.

It's impressive to be able to make any assessment of a a place and a region you know nothing about. Not unlike many comments found here. Actually, impressive isn't quite the right word. Real estate knowledge is also local. I know many places where prices have doubled in the last 5 years but I'd personally never assume anything about property and a region I'm unfamiliar with, other than to associate like with like, area wise. Which is why I said that owning property is like one's ante in a game, it keeps you in the market in the medium to long term. It's not an investment like others, not an asset that can be accessed until you cash out without buying another home or die.

Both. Our closet is a walk in, with 3 bars to hang clothes on, one on one side and 2 on the other, and 2 long shelves across the top over the bars. On my side, I hang up my work shirts, sundresses, and seasonal tops. I fold my pants, everyday t-shirts, pjs, etc and put them on the shelf. On SOs side, I hang up all his shirts, and fold his pants and put them on the shelf above. He has more clothes than me. When we moved I did not want a dresser for clothes. Our TV sits on top of a dresser, and I store other things in it, like my hair dryer, extra pillowcases, batteries for the remote and a flashlight, things like that. I hate stuffing clothes into dresser drawers and have to dig through them, making a mess as I go, looking for something.

But for something as essential as closet space, it's easy enough to find choices that will tick that box. Why settle for less?

I guess because I got some things I wanted more: An antique house with considerable charm, acreage that enabled us to have all the animals we wanted (dogs, cats, horses), a huge barn (with a darkroom!) and space to grow gardens galore.

Your checklist is sensible, Elmer, and I'm glad it worked for you. But I didn't have one. And that was just as well, because although suburban California may make it "easy enough to find choices," in rural locations the pickings tend to be a lot slimmer.

Of course, alisande, we all make choices and I'm glad you're happy with yours.

For many, the diversity and availability of employment opportunities is a major (but not the only) factor that influences where people choose to live. I could not have had the career I had away from an urban or major business center and would not have been happy with a lifetime of unchallenging work and inadequate income. Before the work at home practice started just recently, this was true for most people with professional or white collar jobs who can now partially or entirely work at home and is still true for people in trades who want to have a robust customer population to draw from. Small town and rural locations offer limited choices, often limited employment opportunities and limited resources of all kinds.

Supply and demand controls. Choices are limited where demand is limited and choices are much greater and more numerous where demand is higher. Also a factor is the life one chooses to pursue, of course. For me, it was an easy choice to pursue a course with greater personal financial security and rewards and proximity to cultural opportunities. Others make different choices. No wrong or right answers, all personal preferences.
