Need to hide my neighbor's trash.......
Comments (16)Ok---progress report from me. I am constructing a natural fence for the length of his trash pile---believe me, it is growing by day---he even added old furniture...sigh...The fence was only going to be for his trash pile, but I decided to lengthen the fence to cover his whole side yard. I decided that I doubted we would ever converse again. No more cookies for him!!! LOL I am going outside to take some pictures and will post for all to see....:) I am using weathered wood for the construction of the fence---I thought this would be a pretty natural look with a line of thujas planted in front. Thanks!!...See MoreMy neighbor's building an ugly retaining wall
Comments (23)thane, I think you need to have someone from code compliance come and look at the wall. Just go ahead and make the complaint that you "believe the wall is in violation." When the person comes out, show them the sheet and ask for an interpretation. I usually find that at least the first wave of people you ever talk to on the phone at the City of Bellevue are more confused than you are. I called to report that a campaign sign had been NAILED to a tree on a public right-of-way. I have been told that the parks department is responsible for all public trees. So I called the parks department. The woman there transferred me to transportation as soon as I said "sign". The the woman at transportation said, you need to talk to parks and transferred me back. Then the woman I first talked to decided to transfer me to her supervisor because she didn't understand what I meant by "a tree in city-maintained property along a street" ("you mean a tree in a park???"). If you need a yard or so of arborist wood chips and have some way to transport them, send me an e-mail (click on my user name here, then select "send me an e-mail"). I have a pile in my front yard and I'd be happy to give you some to help protect your plantings....See MoreHow to hide my neighbor's chain link fence
Comments (23)How long a fence is it? Do you think your neighbor would mind (or notice) if you put a vine on it? Doesn't hurt to ask. If it's a really sturdy fence, wisteria might be nice. Even though it goes dormant, it still has a nice woody presence and will hide most of the fence once it grows up a bit. Even grapes could be useful here. If you don't mind losing a little space and want something softer than coniferous evergreens, there are some really wonderful clumping bamboos that can stay green all winter in your zone (check out Fargesia spp.). If you plant them close to the fence, they'll swallow it up and render it invisible. The landscaping forum can be helpful if you decide to go with plants....See MoreNeed help, my house is ugly
Comments (16)Also you need to add some trim across the front of the porch (currently is only a row of siding) and across the top of the window on the right of the picture. If you do remove the shutters (I don't necessarily agree with that, but they currently are too skinny for sure on the right windows) probably beef up the trim around the windows - making sure all 3 window trims match. Otherwise the window will just look puny. One of the things that give it a "cheap" look is the lack of, or inadequate (such as the skinny posts) finishing touches like good trim. Go to a siding website manufacturer website to look at all the options for trim. You can upload a good photo of the house too, and try out different colors and combinations. I dislike brown roofs for the most part also - especially when matched with yellow! Most are a shade of brown that is hard to work with. The photo AB posted looks great though, if your roof is close to that color then you do have several options for a siding color. Last resort - even asphalt shingle roofs can be painted (Behr makes a paint specifically for this), but just like painted siding, it won't last forever and will require touch ups and eventually full repainting to keep looking good. My painted aluminum siding needed work after about 10 years....See Morekitasei2
