Landscape Design Design Dilemma

Where should we put a flag?

Hello! My husband has always wanted someplace to put a flag outside our home. There aren't any "no brainer" spots. Our house is on a steep slope, and the front door is approached from the lower right part of the photo. We don't want to block the steps or the door, and it's hard to access other spots because of the incline of the slope (for example, the tree that crosses our patio). If this were your home, where would you place a flag?

I assume you’re referring to our American flag. Challenging to find a place for a pole on your slope so maybe it has to be mounted on house. Wherever it goes needs to be in a spot that you can access it to maintain proper flag etiquette & respect for it. If up 24/7 must be Viewable at all times so it needs to be lit at night; needs to be accessible so it can be lowered & removed during inclement weather. If it’s a sports flag or decorative one of some kind maybe house mounted is still best optio.

What's the aisle width b/w the island and the doorway that leads to the LR/DR area? If there's enough space, perhaps you could increase the width of the oven cabinet and put an outlet on each side. Use trim to fit the oven in the wider cabinet. I'm not sure how much room you need. I do know that the outlets in the ends of our peninsulas fit b/w the side of the drawers & the side walls of the cabinets without affecting the drawer itself...i.e, no reducing the drawer, etc. However, there may be some electrical/code reasons not to do this, so maybe an expert electrician will chime in as well! Do you have a picture of the cabinets in the island you could post? It may give us more ideas if we actually see what you're describing, especially for "visual" people.

I had imagined we would lean art on the ledge going across. There will be two black sconces installed (you can see the holes for them). The ledge across is kinda odd and I guess that’s what we’re trying to solve for - to make it look more deliberate, since there is no longer a pass thru. Is there a play to hang art in FRONT of the ledge as well as some leaving? To create some dimension and kinda cover the ledge?

Do you entertain in this room or is it strictly for family TV watching? If everyone wants to cuddle up on the big sectional then I would float it in the middle, but it looks too large to walk around it that way. Get one with fewer seats. If you have guests over a lot, they'll be happier if you have a pair of chairs and a 3-seat couch (maybe with a chaise portion that can flip from left to right when you want to rearrange.) People won't sit in the corner and they'll usually leave a vacant seat between them on any sofa. No one will want to sit on the end of the chaise with nothing to support their back, and they may not feel comfortable hogging the entire thing for themselves. It isn't very practical for entertaining.

It was adjacent to a conservation area. Bears/deer/wild turkeys/alligators were very common We did have a screened lanai - that doesn’t stop a bear from coming through. Refrigerator bear attacks were common in our neighborhood. Most fridges were in garages and got hit when garage doors were left open.The bears opened the fridge - took out milk/yogurt/ice cream whatever. Drank/ate - folks found the empty containers. They did shut the door though! A few neighbors found bears sitting in their pools/spa. I wasn’t sorry to move to be honest. You definitely had to be careful walking at night.

I would hang it flat between the two windows on the left. Whether you hang it vertically or horizontally, the stars should be in the upper left hand corner.

We always hung ours on the garage on the wide door trim. It was an easy height to take down and was lit by the lights on the garage. Our garage is on the front, facing the street. A few years ago I gave my husband a flagpole that was installed on the lawn to the right of the garage. It came with a solar light that keeps it lit in the dark. Is there spot on the right corner that would work?

The flag itself does not need to be lit with its own light source. It should be available to continuous ambient light whether it's a street light, your interior light home if placed between two windows, another homes' light or your front door light even if it's not near the flag. Essentially the flag should never be flown in the dark. Flag etiquette is not a legal requirement so you're not going to get ticketed for it, but rather highly encouraged. The flag is protected speech under the First Amendment. (USAF Honor Guard, 2002-2010)

Man, I have also recently ordered flag pole light on Amazon for my landscape and I am very satisfied with it! This thing has automatic daylight sensor, it fits most flagpoles from 15-25 feet with 1 minute installation. Moreover, solar flag pole light is best in brightness and batteries last long enough. I put it in front of my house so that everybody who passes over see my new purchase! And what about your flag, I would recommend you to put it on house-top, in front of a door or in front of a house because the main reason is to put it in such way that most of the people see it, otherwise why should you buy it?
