Where to put outlet in this island(and should we raise a cabinet)

With so many details that come up, how does the desing can ever be completed? We started talking about outlets and immediately realized we have another "challenge".

You can't see it in the picture but we got a 9" cabinet, a 21" sink cabinet, a 36" drawer cabinet and a 24" UC oven in the island. I don't want to give up any space in the 36" drawer cabinet because this is my one and only 36" base cabinet. The oven being at the end means no outlet can go on that side.

I am considering changing the cabinet on the other side of the island to 30" wide, 42" high and 18" deep to have the outlet on the back side of it facing the range. A raised cabinet would certainly change the look and feel of the island and what that side can be used for. But I am at a loss where else we can have a functional outlet

Can you drop a mockett into the countertop towards the back of the 36" drawer base? There is always a little space between the back of the cabinet and the back edge of the drawer. You may only need to notch out your top drawer.

Someone on here used the false drawer on their sink base and disguised an outlet behind it using a bottom hinge.

Here is a recent thread on this but I don't see the drawer base idea in there.

I recommend against Ughmold. (Sorry, Plugmold.) Countrygal, yours looks OK, blends in well, but when I had it installed on the ends of my island, I felt sick. I am waiting for the cabinet guy to make a strip of molding to cover the holes that the electricians made installing it. The elec. knew of no other options, since we didn't plan for or have space for regular outlets. But after the fact, buffalotina mentioned Sillites to me and I ended up trading them out. It was worth it; even the holes that are there now don't bother me nearly as much as the strip did. (Maybe because I know they will be covered eventually.) The only problem is that it doesn't seem to hold big plugs like those for our computers. But that's a minor problem. Plugmold Sillite

I have a small Amish island which has added significantly to my work area - I have much less perimeter counter space then you do. If you are contemplating a total redo in a few years, a small island (furniture really - not built in so no electric) might be a small investment to get you through for a while. Mine was about $1500 (without the top) but similar come cheaper - painted MDF rather than wood. I had a butcher block top on it for several years. You might be able to match your present countertops too. In any event, there is plenty of space in the kitchen area and no need for a wall to come down unless that is something you want design wise and have the money for. Should we put 9 ft. or 10 ft. ceilings in a new Craftsman build?

cpartist give excellent suggestions for how to deal with 10 foot tall kitchens, keeping the ambiance Craftsman and attractive. I will note I find 9 foot tall ceilings plenty fine for me, but go with feels comfortable to you. Although I do have a cathedral ceiling in the public part of the house.... (No, my house is not Craftsman). As someone else noted, you'll have to change your door heights and other aspects of your home to go with the increase in ceiling height - and that's not going to be cheap. Even at six foot one, I don't feel cramped in homes that have 8 foot ceilings - I was just in one (probably built in the 60s or 70s) this past Sunday (after months of not being to get out and visit folk very often at all). It was fine. But 9 doesn't affect pricing as much as 10 feet would. Please don't do without upper cabinets. You'll hurt resale, as not everyone is going to want to stop everything and remodel as soon as they move in. Even though I mostly have drawers, the lowest one is always a pain to access anyway..

What's the aisle width b/w the island and the doorway that leads to the LR/DR area? If there's enough space, perhaps you could increase the width of the oven cabinet and put an outlet on each side. Use trim to fit the oven in the wider cabinet. I'm not sure how much room you need. I do know that the outlets in the ends of our peninsulas fit b/w the side of the drawers & the side walls of the cabinets without affecting the drawer itself...i.e, no reducing the drawer, etc. However, there may be some electrical/code reasons not to do this, so maybe an expert electrician will chime in as well!

Do you have a picture of the cabinets in the island you could post? It may give us more ideas if we actually see what you're describing, especially for "visual" people.

I meant to also add....be sure the corner of the counter over the oven cabinet is rounded enough so that if someone bumps it getting in/out or even sitting in that last seat on the right doesn't get hurt! I'd probably just connect the two areas to make a smooth line, but it's up to you.

laxsupermom and anyone else familiar with mocketts, do they come up above the granite? In other words, is the counter no longer flat where the mockett is?

Cleo, this sounds interesting, right now the sink cabinet on the plan is a full door, no drawer, but it is something to think about.

Buehl, sorry, don't have a picture of the other side online. Unfortunately, my paper copy got all wet in the rain and not usable for taking a photo of. Should have one one tomorrow.
