Why Don't You Use Your Dining Room?
Comments (41)We've been in this house for 26 years and the original kitchen was small and poorly designed with 6 - yep that's right 6 doors or hallway openings. When the 5 of us sat down for meals only the 2 on the end could get up. So we ate in the dining room most nights on a plywood table that DH made until we renovated. Both of us cook and we enjoy having guests so we put on a large addition and at 30 x 18 my kitchen is the largest room in the house and we love it. It mimics our formal dining room with dark cherry cabinets and Oriental rugs on the ceramic. We usually have all our meals there. We've made lighting the candles and saying grace (or a few woods to mark the day's events) a ritual. But there's still nothing like sitting down as a family for meals in the dining room which now has a real table and china cabinet and using the silver and china. There's a different feeling to using the dining room that makes it special. But when we designed our vacation/retirement home in the mts. we made a large great room so it's a combination living - dining- kitchen area....See MoreTell me why you love your french door fridge...or not!
Comments (41)We have a Thermador FD and I absolutely love it. I love having the freezer on the bottom most of all, so you could have the same thing with a single door on top. I'll never have a top freezer again. I love that I can look down into the freezer and see what is in there, and can easily move things around, to see what is on the bottom without a frozen steak falling out on my foot. The Thermador also has a top drawer in the freezer that that slides out and that is where I keep things I use most frequently. That is also where the ice maker is. I love that also because it is so easly to scoope ice out and my kids can reach it easily and get their own ice. I had a side by side when we moved into this house and I despised it. Never again. As for the french door vs. single door on top -- I like the FD. We would have clearance issues with a big door opening into a fairly narrow aisle so the FD works better. And I have the fridge paneled with cabinetry. I think the FD has more of a furniture look than a single door. The Thermador is also fully integrated. It is totally flush and doesn't stick out at all, and I love that. But the shelves in the fridge are pretty high up, and if you are short, it might be an issue. And my kids can't really reach into the fridge yet, although they will soon. And I do mostly open both doors every time I open the fridge, but it is more a habit than a necessity, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest....See MoreFridge surround -- I don't think this is right
Comments (21)My thing is, I don't think I'll see the cabinet guy tomorrow. The cabinet is attached to the end panels only, since it's sitting out from the back wall. Could they switch out the cabinet after the floor install and before the fridge install? Could they also switch out the cabinet after the floor and fridge installs? (This speaks to whether I'll push for a new cabinet or not.) Also I want as much as humanly possible done that affects FUNCTION before I return to work on 8/11. I'm already taking at least a partial day off for some appliance installs on 8/13. If it's something that I don't HAVE to be there for, I can have someone else be there with workers. But I REALLY need to be there for counters, etc. Thanks so much ajc for talking me off this ledge....See MoreWhy don’t more people choose induction?
Comments (102)cpartist, my old Bosch induction cooktop was very forgiving, too. Spills and boil overs were never a problem. It was the old Bosch 300, no longer made, unfortunately. We moved, and installed a Bosch 800 in our remodel. I have to say, it is more sensitive to everything, including spills — but only if the spill reaches the control panel zone. I still would not give up this cooktop, or go back to gas. Ever. But I wish I had swapped out the 300 before I sold the old house. It was much less sensitive to touch and spills. and the beeps were softer and less annoying....See MoreJeffrey R. Grenz, General Contractor
