Speed Oven: Tell me Why you LOVE it...
Comments (43)I have a love hate relationship with the speed oven. It is wonderful to have a real half sized oven that will cook like a regular oven.. There are only two of us so we use this 90% of the time. We have a full size oven below the speed oven. Unless you have a huge family I can't see why you'd need a double oven plus a speed oven. The manual for the speed oven sucks big time but the oven works well. It is a normal oven, a normal microwave, a convection oven, a broiler and a few others plus it can combine some functions like microwave and convection. That said I remodeled an apartment for my daughter and bought her a much less expensive Kitchenaide version of the speed oven ANd it has a great manual, is easy to use and does most of what the speed oven does. On another topic I would never buy stainless steel again. White is so much easier to keep clean. And I bought a French door fridge that cost a lot more than a regular two door and doesn't hold as much. When you remodel you get a lot of pressure to choose the more expensive options. I don't need to impress anyone so id be fine with white and a normal fridge. I do LOVE my induction cooktop and my quiet Meile dishwasher and the new front loading washer and dryer really do clean well, use lots less water and dries a full load in 35 minutes. I dont like the front loading washer but am still impressed....See MoreTell me why I'd love a gas cooktop..
Comments (20)Frankly, I think the "cost" of the fuel used to cook is a minor issue either way. The cost of the food and heck the refrigeration of the food (and any leftovers) probably dwarfs the cost of the gas or electricity used to cook it. I've also heard the argument that induction is over 90% efficient so it's greener and better for the environment but that's a flawed argument as well since the generation of electricity is a combustion process as well. To over simplify it a bit, if you live in an area where they burn coal to generate electricity, then I would argue that using electricity to cook compared to natural gas is less "green". But if you live in an area where most of your electricity is generated from wind or solar (or if you have a solar house), then induction is extremely green. In the end, I think it's a wash either way. Just go with the technology that you are most comfortable with. I love cooking with gas because I know how it behaves and how to work with it. Induction might be better in many ways but I'm not ready to deal with the limitations it has with my style of cooking at this point. Who knows, 5 years down the line I might be a huge proponent of induction....See MoreFor those who dislike french door fridges, why?
Comments (32)I’m DEFINITELY with the group that DO NOT like FD style. Sorry to say this but - yes, I’m of the opinion the FD style is just another way to capture the market for people who have to have the latest en Vogue (anything) even if it doesn’t really make practical sense. I have stayed at two different family‘s homes over the past five years (they both love their FD frig designs) and I have used their FD frig(s) in multiple situations where there were large gatherings of people, with lots of food prep going on, as well as just daily food prep, putting groceries away, getting ice out of bottom freezer for drinks, to fill ice chest; opening the door to access the water and having to use both hands to press on the water dispenser while also holding the glass; putting away leftovers, etc., so I have plenty of experience with all aspects of their use - and I can say hands down that I would never purchase FD for my home. I have owned all other types of R/F configurations, and can say categorically this is not for me. I have just remodeled my home and purchased my newest S/S frig/freezer, and I LOVE it. This is my 3rd S/S (water/ice on outside of door) I’ve purchased in 25 years. (I still have the first one (largest) I purchased 25 years ago - sitting in my garage - and it works like a charm.) Many reasons for my personal choice: 1. I love the the front mount, easy access, ice/water dispenser for beverages (for all family members including children. I am not the mom that doesn’t want my kids to touch stuff.). You can set the glass down on the ledge for easy dispensing; the newest frig even has simple press of the button feature to fill, or hold glass against the lever if you prefer. If you need large quantities of ice, it’s simple to empty the ice maker, (that fits securely in the door and is a closed compartment design); which brings me to another problem I have with the FD ice maker - if you want to remove the ice bin you have to bend down, pull the bin out and then it’s open and seems pretty unsanitary even though it’s in the back; when the ice bin is full, it’s heavy to lift up and out, requires a strong back (and lots of space) if you want to pull the ice bin out to fill an ice chest, etc. 2. I don’t like to have to open both doors to see things: think about it - if there are multiple people in your home - unless you’re a kitchen freak - its hard to make sure everybody is putting the milk away in the same door each time, let alone on the same shelf. 3. Ok - I’m a busy girl and while I could think of many more reasons why I think the FD frig is a mistake - I would rather just stand here admiring my new remodeled kitchen while I place my glass on the ledge and let my automatic water dispenser fill my glass…..without having to open the door……...See MoreHelp! Comments (60)I may just have a lemon with this current KitchenAid. I don't know, but I can tell you that the rusting has been extremely significant, and the repairs so far, very costly. But, it is so quiet that I have to put my ear to the door in order to see if it's on. I do love my KA French Door refrigerator with the freezer drawer at the bottom and no outside ice dispenser. No problems with that, other than the freezer drawer getting ice build up and clogging the drainage hole at the bottom occasionally. We also have a KA double wall oven, which is doing well still, with some recent repairs. This is year ten for all of them, and I am hoping the rest hold out for several more years!...See Morekatiee511
