Houseful, I'm overwhelmed! You're so nice to help me with this! What program are you using to generate these, BTW? I talked to my contractor last night and he says that if I put the shower in the front corner (behind the hall door) that I will be able to have a curbless shower. (That area is currently a closet and is a few inches lower than the rest of the bathroom because it doesn't have the big mud bed like the tile bathroom has. ) At first I was loving the first of the two most recent options but then I realized that if someone is standing at the sink closest to the potty it interferes with getting to / using the potty. I am leaning towards having the vanity straight along the left wall, the potty in the back corner on the right, and a big shower behind the door. I liked the size and shape of the 3rd option at the very top, so I tried putting that behind the door and it seems to work nicely. I think it gives me about 3' clearance between the closest point between the vanity and the shower. Is that good? Thanks again for everything! Anita

So the kids and I spent an abnormally long time cutting apart and taping together boxes for 2 mocked up drawers in the correct dimensions! One of them even has the cut-out for the compost pail. We took all the pots/pans out of the cabinet and put them in the cardboard drawers and rearranged them a hundred times. Every time I thought we reached a solution, I sat on it and changed my mind. The first solution we reached was an option similar to tagging and jakuvall, with lids on the sides. I was able to put lids in both drawers so that each drawer had the corresponding set of lids. We all seemed to like this. It all fit with the 9" depth the KD was planning, and I could get to a lid with one motion rather than the 2nd motion of opening amber lid drawer. And by having a lid section on 2 sides, the lids were separated enough to not get jumbled. I couldn't fit the lids in the back like in my original post because then I wouldn't be able to fit 2 large pots front to back, but on the sides worked. I even had my large stockpot in here! So I was happy. Until... I remembered my nested mixing bowls and large salad chopper which were still in the cabinet. Neither are with my pots/ pans now, but I would love it they were. But not enough space in the drawers because dang it, I was using space for lids. So I took out the lids and was able to squeeze in both the mixing bowls AND the big salad chopper. Now I am thinking back to putting all the lids in the skinny roll out above. Right now at 9" depth everything fits (tallest stockpot is 8"). If I add to that another 2-3" for the lid roll out, I assume I will need 12" for that drawer height, which I will deduct from the 2nd drawer, which only has the skillets anyway. Making I guess a 12" drawer and a 6" drawer. Does this make sense? I am sure as these mock ups sit in the kitchen longer I will change my mind yet again (yes, there have been pots and pans all over the kitchen floor for 3 days...)

Each of the DWs I have been able to select has been what I consider upper mid-level -- something below the top of the line but with good insulation and washing features. The last two were a KA and my current pair of Bosch and each was one or two notches below their top of the line ($700-900)-- which is a big step from a Miele. I couldn't go to something less on the DW because my experience with mid to lower end models has been a lot more noise and less cleaning. I'd rather just build in a pull out drying rack and drip pan than go back to those, but I don't need a Miele and sure wasn't ready to do a pair! On the fridge, I have mixed feelings. I love my Thermador columns. It is above most of our neighborhood (there may be a couple other built-ins but I'm only thinking of one right now). We just took delivery of an LG bottom freezer for our utility room Saturday and I am moving things into it. To assure delivery in time to get our rebates and because the sale prices were so good, we went to the stainless finish. It looks great and I could see it as a primary fridge for most kitchens. The use of space is very different and you tend to forget how deep freestanding fridges can be. The built-ins make everything so much easier to see and access. I could go back, but I'd have to be diligent about the use and organization of the deeper fridge and remember to check behind things where I don't have to so much now. Going to a CD would be less of an adjustment. I have gone backwards on cooktops twice -- both with plans of changing them out that didn't happen very quickly. I hated the cooktops, but I have learned that if there is enough heat to cook, you can adjust.

Consider picking your top three choices of wall color and then let the children choose from them. Keep it fairly neutral. Keep the trim white. Would not put fabric window coverings over the windows -- white plantation shutters could be a better idea. You need storage. Where possible, get furnishings that serve a dual purpose. Also choose furnishings that work now and can age with your children. A storage ottoman for each child could serve as a seat with storage. With a lid that flips, it could also be a single tablet top. Paired/sized for use with a table, they could encourage the two of them to play together : table top and/or board and/or card games,putting together jig saw puzzles. Used as a seat now for small children, an ottoman could later be used for its intended purpose. A large cork bulletin board for each child could help solve some display issues. A single high shelf the same color as the wall hung all around the room over the door and window frames could provide room for small items or storage containers . Office furnishings might be worth considering -- especially if gently used and priced right -- such as a credenza (providing a wide table top) or a pair of short filing cabinets (two file drawers, perhaps with a third top shallow drawer) could provide storage and, with a plywood top, could serve as a table or desk. Box shelves or modern interesting wall shelving would be worth considering.
