Tile over peel&Stick over hardwood - try to save the wood?

Who knows why they did this, but my entire first floor is tile (5 different tiles to be exact). I have always hated them and we are not doing something about it. The tiles are coming up regardless - the end product is what I am over thinking lol

We have 3 different tile situations:

  • Tile over peel&stick over the hardwood.
  • Tile directly on the hardwood
  • Tile over wood subfloor

I chipped away about a 4 ft section to see what we were possibly dealing with. The floors in that area don't look bad at all - I totally think we could sand and restain. It was a hard process since I had to chip the tile and then heat the peel & stick to remove.

The tile that is directly on the wood is concerning to me. Is it possible to sand mortar? Is it possible to not damage the floor when removing the tile?

Should I just not care about keeping the wood and just go with something else - the tile still has to come up, so the mortar issue is still there.

If I don't care about saving the floors, then I think demo will be easier since who cares if you do some damage by accident.

Can these floors be stained a bit darker after sanding?

Please help ;)
