LOW budget kitchen makeover

HELP! We are looking to change our flooring and counter tops. We are willing to paint the cabinets if it's best. also changing lighting. looking for any suggestions on colors, and products, decorating, etc. WE WANT SOMETHING IN STYLE.

Your kitchen is very spacious but the dark tones seem to make the walls close in. I would suggest painting your cabinets white or light colors of your preference. Corian, marble, or quartz would look nice for your countertop. These updates would definitely lighten up your space. Backsplash would look nice in your space also. For floors, any wood tones would warm up your space if you choose to paint your cabinets white. If your want a pop of color, you can paint the island a different color of your choosing. You can also replace the hardware for the cabinets and coordinate the finish with whatever pendant lighting you choose. You can pick and choose the updates that you think are most necessary and that wouldn’t break your budget. Good Luck!

this is exactly what I was thinking! I'm having a hard time deciding colors 🤔 in thinking light grey cabinets, with light counter tops, I'm thinking white, and add gold hardware. the island I'd paint black (also have white counter tops), and gold hardware, with my pendant lighting being black with gold. so you know of an app I could insert my picture and mess around with colors, etc? 🤔🤔

Hi Jeff. I've been reading up on the code, and while vertical clearance to combustible materials is distinctly noted at a 30" minimum, side or horizontal clearance is not as clear. The code refers to installing household cooking appliances "in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions." I am posing the question back to Capital; perhaps their note is outdated or I am missing something in the National Fuel Gas Code. I had the same initial question regarding plastic laminate tops and their proximity to a cook top. Combustible materials are defined by the code as such: "As pertaining to materials adjacent to or in contact with heat-producing appliances...shall mean materials made of or surfaced with wood, compressed paper, plant fibers, or other materials that are capable of being burned. Such material shall be considered combustible even though flame-proofed, fire-retardant treated, or plastered." It goes on to give samples of noncombustible material as steel, iron, brick, tile, concrete, slate, asbestos, glass, and plaster (Section 3.3.65.1 & .2). Talk about vagaries. Plaster makes both lists. Seems like good judgment and following manufacturers instructions will be the best guidelines here. I'm so glad you guys like it! I actually look forward to cooking in there now. Maybe production house is a regional phrase? I'm not sure. I must have picked it up somewhere, but now I don't know where. What I meant by that is tract housing, with big groups of houses built simultaneously and quickly and those homes all utilizing the same basic inexpensive materials and finishes. For example, in my development of 500 houses/rowhouses, there are maybe 5 single family floorplans, and the exteriors look very similar. People who bought 8 years ago as they were being built were able to make just a few simple choices/upgrades, but could not change the floorplans at all. When they were built they all had the same cabinets (3 different finishes), tubs, sinks, light fixtures, faucets, furnaces, water heaters, appliances (white or black), windows, doors, roofs, etc. That doesn't sound all that attractive, I know, but the benefit is that they were a very good value for the area and the houses although not gracious, are really easy to live in and efficient. rocketmomkd, I thought my Jadite was going to be so pretty in there. I couldn't wait to display it. And then I did. It didn't look good at all. I couldn't believe it. I put it in a cupboard instead. At least I use it a lot more now.

paint will be your most cost effective way, especially if the kitchen is of good quality! Do white tops and a gray/blue lowers and i really think i would like to have a kitchen like it then....I did that for our house, and the kitchen is way outdated, but every comments on the colour scheme. The white counter will look sharp after you paint the lowers darker! All the best!

Olychick, That's a great idea for a pantry, if my kitchen was to stay as is now, I was also thinking of adding a pantry in that section. I was gathering ideas with my husband about a layout plan if we were to tear down the kitchen. If so, we will definitely add more cabinets, with more cabinets then I wouldn't necessarily need a pantry as I would already have more storage space, compared to now. In that section that you mentioned where the pantry could be placed, we thought about connecting the counter top and either adding a lazy susan on bottom cabinets, then connecting the counter top all the way around sort of like an "L"shape extending to a small bar area in that case the stove will most likely stay where it is at now and the refrigerator would be moved far right next to the window where the sink is at. Don't know if that sounds confusing, but I'm designing the layout in Ikea Home Planner to get a better visual. :)

Flooring and countertops are NOT low budget fixes. And, unless you are great painters, I would have a pro do the work, and that is super expensive. Now you will want new hardware, another expense.

I see you have little ones. Why not wait a few years and start from scratch.

In the meantime, you could paint the walls: in an eggshell finish and the laminate counter tops the same, in a gloss finish

I found an app that may help you visualize your space. It may work or not. I have never used it so I’m not sure how it works. You should be able to find it on the App Store if you look up room planner.

Check out Sherwin Williams color in Amazing Grey. I think that would look awesome on your kitchen cabinet (I think gray is a neutral color that will never go out of style). I know you titled “Budget”. They make some really nice “wood looking” prefinished floors that could be an answer for you. Then new counter tops. Again, staying low budget, the choices of Formica have really changed over the years ...so if you can’t splurge on a Quartz or Granite, check those out. It would make a huge difference to your look.
