Really really need some advice on how to transform my living room
Comments (15)Cant take the fireplace off because we're renting at the moment and the bloke said he didn't want it removed. This is the fireplace that's underneath it. We've literally just moved in and all the walls are white but there's so much stuff I want to change! I hate the blinds, I don't know if it'd the colour of them or not... We kinda need something covering over there as we get the sun directly in. I know everything doesn't go. Trust me I can't stand it as my old place was very shabby chic but we needed a bigger place asap as we've just had to settle with the design of this room. Just any ideas for quick fixes would be great. Or anything else I could cover that hideous gas fire with. Can't really paint at the moment coz of the baby over wise I would. Thanks everyone for your help so far...See MoreHow do I lighten up my Mom’s basement living room?
Comments (32)Condolences for your loss. Mother's Day is coming up. You might consider a digital picture display with a light colored frame with happy pictures loaded to add light and prompt happy memories.. https://www.google.com/search?q=electric+digital+photo+frame&client=firefox-b-1-d&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjd_b7llbnoAhXEmuAKHRT1DIgQsxh6BAgOECs&biw=1366&bih=654#spd=9152850867742305625 You might remove the too small rug altogether and add a small light/bright colored storage ottoman or even a coffee table where she can keep family photographs. Agree with the suggestion that you try swapping the loveseat and rocker locations. With the loveseat moved, you can dress the patio door/window. If that is a sliding door, a wood or metal rod in the bottom rail might make the room "feel" more secure -- no need to block it with a sofa. A lot of people don't care for vertical blinds but I consider them perfect for a patio door or even a large row of windows in an informal / contemporary room. White vinyl vertical blinds would provide more privacy and light control options than drapes. If your mom's window is on the north side of the building, she'll not be getting any sunlight directly into her room and that may be one reason why the room is "dark" . If any light comes in ... or even if it doesn't ... consider adding a brightly colored sun catcher or two that can be attached to the window via small plastic suction cup. https://www.google.com/search?q=tiffany+suncatchers&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwigr7T2k7noAhUvmuAKHahuBwcQ_AUoAnoECAsQBA&biw=1366&bih=628 There are fabric covers for sofas and love seats. Perhaps you could find a light colored one for at least one of her pieces. Alternately, a light colored afghan or throw might help. Instead of getting rid of the cabinet(s) in the corner(s), you could add a tall thin lamp with a large white shade there. If the big box store options are out of price range, check with Habitat for Humanity or Good Will or other local charity sponsored thrift stores for bargains....See MoreHow do I finish this living/tv room?
Comments (23)Dear Jen, I would like to make a case for “the sectional” OR in our case a couch with a reversible chaise lounge. I tell you the truth it is by far “THE BEST PIECE OF LIVING ROOM FURNITURE WE HAVE EVER PURCHASED”!!! I can put my legs up or lay down and rest on the chaise section of the couch while my husband kicks his legs up on the large ottoman to watch TV in the evening; when all is quiet for the day. This wonderful couch is comfortable, roomy, durable, resilient, sturdy, washable and can opt as a guest bed if needed. When my son comes to visit with his 4 and 2 year old girls it withstands the jump test, believe me. And, if a spill happens I just remove the cover, throw it in the wash, dry it quickly (and it does dry quickly because of the microfiber fabric) put it back on the cushion involved and viola, just like new again. We are all able to sit together to watch TV, read a book or play a game. It is a great couch. Please reconsider getting a couch like this. It does in fact open the room up by the mere fact that you have fewer small pieces of furniture in that very small space. The fact that the curve/chaise is against the far window means it is making use of an open space for seating whereas the other furniture does not fill that space as well. Also when we have company over we are able to get 5 to 6 people (especially with our little ones) on the couch and two more on the large ottoman and all comfortably. Comments (4)Glad to be helpful. A credenza below the TV should be 25% wider than the physical width of the TV itself. Center the TV setup on that wall. Can't tell which of your sliders moves to give you access to the balcony, but I presume it is the one behind the cat tower. You might consider a track on the ceiling all the way across that end of the room. Use a semi-sheer linen curtain all the way across. Since you have no view and don't want neighbors seeing into your space, you could keep them closed most of the time, and still have light filtering in while able to slide them to access the balcony. Pic below shows how the track would look. For tables, I'd use a pair of "C" tables. They're handy for drinks, laptops and they can slide under the sofa to be out of the way. The one below is a cheap version, but they come in all styles and price ranges. I would wait and get them to work well with the TV credenza. Then use an arc floor lamp in the corner by the window. A rug should slip under the sofa to that first seam on the arm, and it should extend past the two ends of the sofa by a foot or more....See Moreeverdebz
