Options for closet with long (4ft) return wall

Hello,

My house has two reach-in closets, each with a 4ft return wall with a sloping down ceiling which removes any head room to wiggle to the back. I've been struggling to come up with how to use the space well as its a smaller home without a lot of storage options. They function as non-seasonal overflow as our master bedroom closet isn't much better.

I can only think to place an hanging rod just inset of the return wall and leave the space behind it empty or to open the wall up and increase the door width to 6 ft, though I would like to avoid the cost/construction, and the rooms themselves do work best with that larger wall available to them.
