X-post: What wood floors to go with natural cherry cabinets
Comments (5)I went out to the flooring stores today and came back more confused. First, I realized that I should only get a sample of the specific flooring I want (including thickness and company), not just the wood species. The same species looks a lot different from different manufacturers and even from different production methods (engineered vs solid, etc). When I got home I realized that I was probably going to fail at matching the natural cherry to something, because the cherry will darken with age! So even if I found something today that I liked, things will be different in a year. So I have decided to go back to the amendoim after all. It does have a reddish tone, without being dark and red like the Brazilian cherry. And I do not want all cherry anyway - I am going to use cherry cabinets (stained a dark color, but still cherry). So I expect it will all work out in the end. I have read posts where people have cherry furniture on amendoim flooring, and they love the combination. I always assumed they meant the "cherry" furniture that is really ash or birch stained the dark red color. But now I realize even a natural cherry will end up getting to the darker color over the years. Ah, how easy it is to drive myself crazy with all of the litte decisions (reminding myself that this is not life-or-death). Good luck, willienak....See MoreWhat color wood floor for modern farmhouse light grey kitchen cabinets
Comments (13)I do like the cerused look myself and its really what I initially had in mind as my stain. Its not a finish everyone offers, is likely to be an upcharge if it is offered, and is going to look best on a rift or quartersawn white oak which isn't cheap wood to start with. I'm happy with how mine turned out and everyone who sees it seems to like it. It's driftwood on maple with an black glaze. Without the black glaze, the pink of the wood showed through and was too much. It's definitely grey, but it has an underlying brown and slightly pink tone so its warm and not GREY. I think it fairly different/unique/unexpected. Would probably have been a bit much for the entire kitchen though, I'd be careful of using grey flooring though, it's such a huge surface can be overwhelming....See MoreDesign Challenge .. Comments (7)The OP stated, they are a new homeowner and are looking for paint color to update on the cheap. So telling her everything has to go does not help. I like the gray color suggested by Live Wire Oak. That color really updates the space and looks modern. To be honest, IMHO, the counter and backsplash are neutral and blend nicely. I do not find your kitchen offensive, at all. The cabinets are darker walnut color which I like, and not an orange color. The cabinets, counter and backsplash appear to be in good shape. So paint the walls and buy some accessories on the cheap (check out houzz photos for accesory ideas), and enjoy your updated kitchen for many years. I agree a cheap option is to replace the cabinet handles and knobs with something more sleek and modern. My preference is satin chrome color....See MoreOpen Kitchen Remodel- how to make red oak wood floors more modern?
Comments (13)Cynthia is right. There will always be a hint of the red tone. But when I look at my red oak floors, I don't see red. I see medium brown -- because that's the color I stained it. When I got my floors sanded (the previous stain was literally red -- what were they thinking?), the floor guy applied some test swatches on a section of my floor and I had to pick. And I think red oak floors (either natural or stained) will look wonderful with your white cabinets. It will warm up the kitchen....See Moreurchinsushi
