Has anyone filed a diminished value claim after an auto accident?

The accident, not my fault, was just a fender bender but did do quite a bit of damage. After recently buying a used car for our daughter, I realized that any claimed damage can be found online and will impact the resale value of the car. I had no idea that diminished value claims were possible but was pleasantly surprised to find info about them online.

I've talked to my dealer, one auto appraiser and to the repair shop about the paperwork and they were nice but basically told me to "google it". I haven't involved my insurance company because I don't want a claim on their books that might impact my future rates.

There are some national companies online that make claims on your behalf but they don't have many reviews and require quite a lot of personal information. I don't want to involve an attorney just yet. I find it hard to believe that getting an appraisal for a car with repaired damage and one for the same car without damage is that difficult.

Has anyone filed a diminished value claim? How did you manage it?
