Hosta Flowers 2020
Comments (43)Debra and NHL - so glad to enable you on Tickle Me Pink! I just think it's a real standout. Can't wait to see it again soon. All of these flowers are just beautiful. I can't believe I used to think hosta flowers were ugly. I guess I'm still not crazy about the super long scapes that veer off to the sides and look a little unkempt (like on Winter Snow)... but even those are okay for a little while until they turn brown (then I cut 'em off). I really like the straight up scapes - Old Dirt, that Sweet Home Chicago is beautiful! I can't believe I don't have one, since I'm originally from Chicago. Peren, you do have amazing flowers, and Teaspoon is especially noticable to me. I have two Teaspoons and they are growing soooo slowly, and have never bloomed. Not sure what's wrong with them... maybe slow to establish. And I love your critter pictures. Sunnywood, whatever it's called, it's gorgeous! Lederhosen - I looked it up in the Library and they say it's rare/difficult to find. I'll be keeping my eyes open for that one. And fragrant too! This summer I'll try to keep all these categories in mind as I work in the garden, and hopefully get some better pictures....See MoreHosta Wide Screen Shots 2020
Comments (69)Old_dirt, take it easy and don't get too impatient. Your lovely garden will wait until you are ready to get out there! We only have a half-acre here, but it keeps me busy. This was last June-all back yard upper level (we have three levels and this is the one I worked on last year-behind garage, patio area. I need to fill in blank spots, but will wait until last year's plants show themselves. In pic below, our Sam and way too many unattended-to-yet weeds. I worked on it , but hadn't started yet. Looking back toward patio. Note to self: divide Carex this year! Anyone near us is welcome to some-should have divided long ago. Moving to right around patio w/Sam again. Below, I interplanted the hosta with Chelone, heucherella, heuchera, astilbe, ferns and Gentiana, and other typical companion plants. The old bench in the background is all that is left of a square redwood picnic table set from my childhood which makes it at least 69 years old! New front side yard (driveway to right) looking back toward upper back yard. Will be filling in this year. Nothing is popping up yet other than daffodils which started blooking this past week. Warm weather expected in the coming week (actually getting up to 70 degrees F.!), so I expect to see some of the spring perennials to start showing. The hosta pips won't show themselves for at least a while-end of April?...See MoreHosta Progression 2020
Comments (34)I spend hours in the winter comparing hostas side by side using the Hosta compare tool Hosta Library Compare. Then I sleep on it, order some more and then compare them. It may sound tedious, but I enjoy it. The next year, I may decide to move some (especially poor performers) or ones needing different sun exposures and do some more comparing. Generally, the ones I buy the same year are grouped together. By the end of it, my mind is spinning and I don't have the foggiest idea what looks good together (I'm still not sure). Thanks for confirming I must be doing something right. This year I ordered a number of light centered Hostas (like last year, lol). I'm thinking of grouping these 5 together: Hearts On Fire, Prime Meridian, Cherokee, Proud Peacock and Marshmallow Sky. It may seem counter intuitive, but I think they are different enough to complement each other without being distracting (I hope). It looks better than this (to me) in the tool, but you get the idea. Will it work? Stay tuned....See MoreHosta Seedlings and Sports 2020
Comments (26)Excellent! Hosta Maker shows up with some very promising youngsters. What's worse, having something interesting that's already out there, or having something interesting that just doesn't grow? Do you still use it for breeding? Here's a pic of the Hosta Volunteer Nursery. I think a bunch are from Dancing Queen.A seedling from a streaker found at Cory's Wildflower GardensIt looks like I may need to split it already to save the streaky part. Or is it not worth the effort if it is stabilizing so quickly? Kaleidochrome seedling Valley's Top seedling planted in too much sun. Now where did I move that to? Flash Of Light tet x Lakeside Sir Logan planted in full sun (and also moved later, but not because it needed it....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
