A very good PSA too!

My office building has a slopped metal roof and when we get a fast thaw after a snow or ice storm the building maintenance ropes off the walks around the building so peeps don't get maimed or kilt.

I have a company issued hard hat that I'll sometimes wear on such occasions to protect what little grey matter I have left.

Depending on weather conditions, better roof insulation today can allow for much thicker accumulations on roof.

It's supposed to reach 15C tomorrow (59F) tomorrow, and the Grand River authority is warning of flood warnings.

Also, never use auto-pilot in your cars during wet weather especially cold weather/snow and thawing. The random exceleration causes spin-outs. DH uses his for comfort but forgets the lack of control that can happen suddenly.

Good grief! Be careful, everybody! At least we just have landslides...

I was driving home to Maine from NJ quite a few years ago. A huge icicle let go off an overhead bridge when I was on a busy highway. I had one of those telescoping time moments as it end over ended towards my car and I was surrounded by other cars on all sides. It came down right in front of me. After I recovered from a massive adrenaline rush I thought my car was unscathed. Later at a rest stop I realized I had some damage.

My roof has luckily already shed it’s load. I am curious about the streams and rivers though. My sister often has her lower fields fill with car sized chunks of ice which rip up her soil. She backs onto a stream that leads right into the Kennebec River. We have had a relatively light snow load but a fast melt leads to ice jams and floods.

We keep our roof "raked" and the eaves de-iced, so thankfully there's no crashing ice here, although it reached nearly 60 today. Nearly 60 again tomorrow, the snow is going to melt fast!

My only problem is opening the door to the chicken coop. It slides on a rail and it causes just enough vibration to knock the snow on the edge of the roof right down on top of me. Usually I have the hood on my coat off and so it goes right down the back of my neck AND I get a hood full. You think I'd stop standing right there, wouldn't you? And yet she persisted, LOL.

Why don't houses and buildings have mesh to stop big chunks from falling off?

Most do, especially new builds and commercial. It is unusual having not had this happen in the dozen years here. These few back to back series of storms were unusual, then a very fast thaw.

Similar to any storm prep...like filling cars with fuel, drinking water, ....

Fires, floods, droughts. Some are seeing weather patterns not experienced in their lifetimes.

It comes from media. A short film between acts of a TV show is usually a "commercial advertisement". There are also "station breaks" where they tell you what station you're watching (I don't know currently, but it used to be a broadcast requirement to announce that every so often). PSA is an unpaid item in the same category that is put out to inform the audience for the public good.

It should be comforting to know that if you have an imminent storm, maybe one in a hundred years for your area, you can reach out to forum/internet friends to guide you through prep.

It is! I wouldn't know the first thing about "winterizing". Oh! Untrue. I know you're supposed to leave a faucet trickling to move water through so the pipes don't freeze up. I wouldn't know the second thing....

So we did just have a heavy storm...and mudslides. They do net the hillsides that give notice that they may go, but plenty of others just go. Not the same as getting clonked on the head by a block of ice! But no bueno if you're actually caught in a slide, or if your laundry room lands in the neighbors' pool...

To install roof solar panels, the angle of incline needs to be much steeper.

I wonder how that may impact sliding ice sheet incidents.
