The house isn't bad at all. It is the landscaping that is trouble. As is often the case, a couple of trees would help. Since the house is low, small flowering trees would work. Keep the plantings low on the right side of the house, but expand the bed out past the porch. We can't really see what is going on at the left side to know what areas are bed and what is hardscaping. Be extremely careful with color if you can't resist the idea of paint. Right now, the various parts of the house - the brick, the roof, and the siding - go together. I don't know how many houses have been posted here since the Landscape Design forum was merged into Houzz that started out with perfectly reasonable 1960s, 1970s color schemes but now are badly in need of fixing because the omnipresent beige siding of the 1990's never went with the brick.

You have a really nice looking house. Would keep the brick-- it looks really good. The brown in the forward facing gable on the right side -- entry door side -- looks best with the brick. The gray may well be the trendy color of the day but the brown -- not boring -- that you have around the entry actually goes much better with the brick. Using that brown over all the rest of the painted surfaces on the entire house will make your home more classic than trendy (in my opinion, a much better look). You don't even need a different/contrasting trim color. What is needed is the two parts of your house to ... match itself by making the colors of the center and left side of your home match the right side your home..

@celerygirl Thank you for your suggestions and visual, it really helps. I am thinking of taking out the existing garden below the big window and using the planters- not sure what I'll fill them with yet, most likely grasses and flowers. We do open those windows at times so will have to put that under consideration too. I never thought of plants along the edge of the walkway- that's a nice look. We just removed an old ash tree that took up a lot of the front yard and shielded the window with some privacy- might be a good time to replace with the tree/shrub you placed in there. Hi Anne, The vertical house numbers are definitely a more contemporary look, as are the larger coach lights. Here is a recommendation for 1/4-1/3 the height of your garage door -- the planters help accent the vertical lines. I would change the light at your front door also. There are several options for vertical address numbers. Here is a company that makes them. There are also separate numbers you can buy. Not sure I would do both the larger lights and the vertical numbers, because I'd be afraid of ending up with numbers where they are difficult to read because they are too low (once they're installed under the coach lights). You can measure and see how it would end up.
