Any suggestions on how to make my rose garden prettier?
Comments (22)Hi Erica, It is difficult to suggest since I live in a different zone (Portland, Oregon). However, I will write what I would do to make it prettier. In the place of "6 roses in front of the hedge" I would plant 6-7 roses "Double Knokout". That rose gives flower through the entire season with color giving an excellent contrast to the grass and the green hedge and a strong accent to your pretty pale house. Also I would plant 3 roses of the "Knokout" instead of the pink shrub rose. Knockout is slightly different from Double Knockout -- that will give a nice effect as well. You did very good by removing the ugly evergreen. The three trellises look very good as well. I would plant some of red climbing roses on them (in my region, blaze does very well, but Dortmunt and Dublin are very good as well). I would go with RED roses to give more color to the light bricks. In front of the trellises, you may have two and a half rows for different flowers (roses, Dahlias, Zinnias, etc). Higher and darker in the back row and smaller and lighter in the front row. I would also plant few bunches of Narcissus (Daffodils) between since they are the first flower ti give a strong impact in spring, and they are low maintainance plants, and they die back in May. Then few azaleas (for example Hino Crimson), since they flower just after Narcissus. In the rows I would plant different roses (or other flowers). From roses I would choose few of a rather small floribunda roses, for example Disneyland, since it gives spectacular and rather unusual colors. I'm very in red and yellow colors, then I would also add a line of marigolds on the edge along the path. I would also plant some ground cover levander to cover 50 % of the brown area (it is evergreen in my climate, and it is covered with flowers for a month). But before doing anything I would remove the existing roses, double dig the entire area, amend some organic matter to the soil. Then I would plant back the removed roses, add new plants, and mulch the area with a new dark, fine mulch....See Morehow do I relax
Comments (20)Upload the photos to a service like photobucket. While a soapy microfiber cloth will do well for daily clean up you might find you need something more once it a while. I use Pledge multi-surface. Our fabricator gave me some super fine steel wool. Said to use it on the granite anytime I wanted to give it a good scrubbing and make it really shine. I have only done that twice in a year and half but it does make a difference. He also said to go easy on the rubbing alcohol because it will break down the sealer. I have White Diamond in the kitchen so the sealer is important. I have Steel Gray in the bathroom with no sealer so I use rubbing alcohol all the time. Comments (20)During the non-summer months, I retreat to the bathroom (lock the door!) for a hot bubble bath and a good book or a magazine or two. I also go to Barnes & Nobles, select a big stack of books/magazines and find a chair in a quiet corner and get lost in my reading. If all else fails, the public library works too. If I can, a nap on Saturday or Sunday afternoon really help to take the edge off. It's a GREAT weekend if I can get a nap in on both days!...See MoreSuggestions for making bathroom more nature-meditative
Comments (11)I'd suggest getting rid of the elements where possible..for example you have both a shelf and a towel rack-there are many shelves that combine hooks or bars for towels or even both. Go for wood/bamboo in these. Check Etsy for shelves like these, both vintage and handmade..or maybe you're handy enough to DIY. I wouldn't move the shower rack to the opposite wall even though it makes sense-it requires for you to turn when showering..a little thing but once I sprained my back like that:) Think whether you wouldn't want to borrow a deeper color for your walls, from your curtain, say, a shade of green. Darker colors generally do great in small light-less spaces, enveloping them and giving them the liveliness. Light colors reflect light=no light and they have less to reflect, so mid tone colors in spaces like bathrooms and bedrooms with not a lot of light can work very well-they hold their own, so to say. Definitely bring a plant. I don't know what plant would be considered Zen...they're all pretty Zen to me. Just find out what works in darker damper spaces. I know ferns, maybe stag horns, some kinds of orchids..Justina Blakeney's blog has Plant-o-pedia, where you can read about dozens of plants and a care for them. But I'm sure the internet is full of suggestions. After that, I'd consider a rug that reminds me of nature. If you craving something happier-then maybe pattern of leaves etc. If something calmer-wooden mat, teak or maybe bamboo one, would be great. There are all sorts of rugs like seagrass that always look cool, calming, and nicely textured, but I don't know about them enough to recommend them-maybe they withstand the moisture not that great. I hope other posters will chime in with more experience in different rug qualities....See Morekerrydavis
