Have you used Zylkene for dog's anxiety?

Our mutt (best we can figure is (wheaten?) terrier and pug) is 7 years old and has always been a bit high strung, but has been getting worse lately. Hypervigilant and very wary of anyone other than family, although he does warm up to people once he slowly gets to know them. Vet suggested Zylkene. We have tramazone and gabapenton to give him prior to vet or groomer appointments but the vet saw today, that is clearly not enough. We have had him since he was a puppy so know that he has never been mistreated. Really just looking for experiences with Zylkene for dogs.

I have never had a dog that I had to give that type of medication but I do have a suggestion based on the age of the dog and the idea that he is wary of anyone other than family. Ask the vet about angled blindness and possible deafness. Deafness you could perhaps make several types of noise from behind or the side while another person watches his eyes and any ear twitches. He knows your scent but new scents may signal danger if he has problems in either of those area.

Angled blindness is like certain forms of glaucoma where a person only sees part of the normal field of vision.

Thanks but vet confirmed that both eyesight and hearing are just fine.

My 15 year old dog had some of the same issues. I think it is a combination of senility and pain. Panting is a sign of pain in dogs. Senility can cause anxiety. About my dog: At about 14, she forgot how to drink water from her bowl. Seriously. I tried every type of bowl, raised it, lowered it, whatever. I ended up having to give her water by using a needleless syringe and squirting it into her mouth. I also could put a cup or so of water in with her food and she drank that fine. Weird. She was also restless at night. Pacing, panting. I think from general confusion, (senility), and probably pain. I had her on deramaxx for arthritis. When that seemed to stop helping, I switched to steroids. Normally I would not put a dog on constant steroids, but at her age, it wasn't like I had to worry about long term effects. I also gave tramadol - twice a day. Increased to 3 times a day towards the end. I think that just like when people get old, old dogs do not need as much sleep/cannot sleep well at night. Think about how many old people get by on 5 hours a night. Part of that may be because they sleep a lot during the day, just like dogs do. Just a theory. Anyway, I would consider switching to steroids for the arthritis, and giving your dog an extra tramadol at bedtime. Good luck, I know it is heartbreaking. My Maggie would get "stuck" too. Behind doors due to senility, or on slippery areas (tile, wood laminate), because she didn't have the muscles in her back legs to be able to get up :( And, I'm very sorry about your daughter Jill. Obedience class will do little for her. She really needs to be in a day care situation. Is it possible to leave her with someone you know? Pay a neighborhood kid? A family member, neighbor or friend she and stay with? I would contact the local humane society and ask if they can help. Also contact the police and let them know you recently adopted the dog and are diligently working on the barking issue. Seperation Anixety is a very very hard issue to deal with if you dont have the time or someone to assist you. It took me close to a year of very careful work with my bull mastiff husky mix to help him over his anxiety - I am retired and hoave the time. You really need help with this. If you can find someone to assist you when you are at work, I do have techniques you can use when you are at home in order to combat this problem but I warn you now it takes a considerable amount of time and patience.

Cynthia nailed it. Your dog simply is not totally housebroken. Dogs pee where they are used to peeing and the last thing we want is for them to get used to peeing in the house. So it's time to go back to the beginning of housebreaking, put on your overcoat and go back outside with her every time. Take a clicker and a few wee treats with you and praise her like crazy. Say your potty words for her. When she discovers that you're clicking and treating her for going she will start going really fast when you take her out. Make sure she's completely empty as best you can before bringing her in. Now look at your clock and her habits. Take notes. You already know she goes right after she wakes, so when you see her sleeping lay your coat out at the ready and take her out instantly as soon as she wakes. It takes at least six weeks to change habits, so expect to be going out with her every time for at least the next six weeks. During that time make it your goal to have not one single bad potty in the house. One bad potty re-starts your six week counter. It's not unusual for a dog her age to start backsliding, particulary when the weather worsens and we stop going out with them -- if that's any comfort to you. Either you really knuckle down on her now, or you're going to have a ruined house and a dog you don't really like. It's never the dog's fault though; it's always up to us to train them very, very thoroughly. We tend to give up too soon and that's our problem. So, happy slogging through the dark nights and the crummy weather! Just know that you're not alone. Dog owners all over the world will be shivering in the cold along with you. Hang in there and do it right during this first year and you'll reap the benefits for the rest of your dog's life. Cop out and you'll have the worst smelling house in town. :/

We have a dog that did that. She has always been a "Nervous Nellie". She used to pee when she got too excited. She ate a hole in our laundry room and again in the boy's bedroom. Then we have Merlin, our male cat. He got locked in my bedroom by accident once. He ripped up the carpet and removed everything but the TV from the dresser and the nightstands. Great that the vet checked as so many do not. With all of the dogs I had only one used a clicker held behind the head to see if there was a hearing problem.

I found this: Zylkene contains bovine-sourced hydrolyzed milk protein, an ingredient that has calming properties.

Since it's a supplement I don't see how it can hurt for you to try it.

My dog used to be high-anxiety at certain times and we went so far as to try tranquilizers. They didn't help much since they just made him sleeply and a little quieter, but he'd still have his moments. His worst times were when he would try to nip my granddaughter whenever she moved suddenly.

We kept him away from GD when she visited and over time my dog became deaf (I think from ear medication). After that he became so much more relaxed, no more barking, and loves attention from GD.

How often does your dog go out for walks and to visit areas where there's activity? Have you tried training with a clicker or treats when he's meeting someone new?

Wouldnt hurt to have a 2nd opinion on his hearing. He could be over sensitive to sounds.

We’ve had great success with a probiotic called Calming Care. When we adopted a 2 yr old Great Dane mix, she was very high strung and got into two fights with other dogs. After going through a couple different trainers, we found one that said our dog was anxious, not aggressive. Then we happened to see a vet who also had an anxiety ridden Great Dane and she recommended that we try this probiotic. After a couple months on it, our dog was much calmer. A year later, she’s a completely different dog.

It may not work for your dog but it’s definitely worth trying!
