Don't think it is either, just by the general style. Since this is a Taoist diety, it is common to several Oriental countries although the artwork looks Japanese to me. The text is in a script common to both Japan and China, so that doesn't tell me anything. Potter's marks would help on the underside.

A good picture of the sticker on the bottom of the saucer may help put a date on the set. Other than that it'll be like finding a needle in a hay stack. Or perhaps you could mail a picture of the cup and the sticker to Replacements.com. Linda C

This set belonged to a pioneer ranching family in California, suspect vintage 1920s. The design seems unusual in comparison to the many sets on the internet. The Nippon mark is difficult to photograph so it is drawn for a better view. I hope someone can comment on this beautiful set. Thanks.
