I have spent hours scrolling thru light fixtures and still have not made any decisions. I need to light over the sink and the counter space to the left and the right. My kitchen faucet is bronze. I plan to I have open shelving on the walls to the left and the right of the sink. The ceilings are very low. It is 4 feet between the counter top and the ceiling.

personally, I'd do canless led lights. they are cheap, efficient, you can change the range of color from soft white to neutral to cool depending on your taste, and they fit into any space over an 1 1/2 inches wide. they also have their own boxes so no worry about sparks. they come in a variety of sizes, I'd say to light the shelves you want with recessed led light strips so they light the countertop as well as what's on the shelves. this is achieved by cutting channels under the shelves so the strips aren't seen but you still have light. use 2" or accent led canless lights for above and a few over the general room. this will also clear up head space and make the space appear taller and noone has to worry about hitting their head.

I think Jesse Fay nailed it... Can lights. And nothing else except maybe under cab lights in areas you are keeping uppers.

If you must do a light maybe something like these black lights below but not the pendants.

Just a follow up: The fixture (ORB flushmount) has been installed and wow, it puts out a lot of light. Perhaps because our kitchen is small and the cabs are white, it's like a surgical suite in there now--I can see so much that I couldn't see before, I want to hire a housecleaner! The fluorescent box was easily removed and there were only two nickel-sized holes in the ceiling that the painter had to repair. If anything, I am sad that I wasted several years living with the tube lights because I thought it would be a bear of a fix and a small fixture would not provide enough light. The recessed lights we had installed seven years ago are totally unnecessary now.

I would definitely change it out if I had the funds. However, I'd choose a more transitional fixture (the one I can see in the entry and the sputnik are very different in style). If you go with the sputnik, I'd use a regular (not edison) bulb. As long as you will need to get an electrician and fix the ceiling, I'd center the fixture over the island and add can lights (on dimmers) while you are at it.

Honestly this wont work the way you want it to. You will end up with glaring light bulbs that do not light the space well. The plastic panel helped to disperse the light and keep it hidden. Pendants will look like " i just removed the panel and hung these" and will also not give you the light you need. You will be loosing light. You had 360 watts of light in there. going down to single bulb fixtures 1. adjustable light fixture 2. put in a dropped ceiling so you can put in 6 wafer led lights 3. put in three flush mount lights with frosted glass.

That looks like a dropped ceiling. Are you sure you can't raise it?

Thanks a ton for your help. I don't think it is a dropped ceiling - its a farmhouse with quirky additions over the years and I believe that this was once a porch. I like the idea of the recessed lights. I am going to share that with our contractor. Hopefully, he will be able to accomplish that.
