Idea of the Week: Two-Arm Lights in the Kitchen
Shake up your kitchen lighting by using a unexpected fixture in a practical way
The kitchen is one of the most difficult rooms to light. Not only are there loads of nooks and crannies that need to be lit for practicality's sake, but it's also important to light each working surface for safe and effective cooking. Many kitchens rely on recessed lighting to illuminate countertops and other workspaces. However, many modern kitchens are using bold and dramatic fixtures to help create a unique atmosphere.
In this eco-friendly Massachusetts home, interior designer Lisa Kauffman Tharp installed several pieces of bold lighting in the kitchen. The pendants over the island are gorgeous — but what really caught our eye were the two-armed wall lights over the top cabinets. Instead of installing recessed lighting underneath the cabinetry, Tharp decided to give the kitchen a lofty, almost art-gallery like look.
Although they're normally used as wall-mounted lights, Tharp decided to install these fixtures on top of the cabinets. The wiring went into a gap on top of the cabinetry where the gabled roof stops. These lights not only highlight the cabinetry, but if you pull them forward, they illuminate the countertops below perfectly.
