How difficult do you want it to be? I just returned a library book by Plaid and in it was a really cute dresser. They overlaid the entire piece with a one-piece stencil (so the result looked like a damask material over the entire piece)then stenciled a small repeat design laid out in a rectangle on the sides and on the top. This was a small petal border with a group of roses in a cluster at each corner. The one piece overall stencil was done in a muted cream so it sort of blended into the background. Hope you can get the mental picture. It was lovely and different.

It's a fun place, but you're ready for change. I think the wide dining room stripes are in conflict with the more narrow shiplap, so that's a place to start. If I were going to do more shiplap, I'd do it in the dining room, not the yellow room. You could take it all the way up to the division between the lower and upper parts of your windows, Top it with a plate rail, and then add a nice pop of color at the top, like the cherry red from the chairs. Start a collection of plates to put on the rail. If one of those two DR walls is wide enough for the china cabinet to stand against it, I would reverse the two pieces there so nothing has to be cornered. Unless you're really tired of it, I think the yellow could stay for a while. Think about slipcovering the sofa and chairs in the cream color from the buffalo check chair, and get a new rug and pillows to change the vibe.

well I ended up finding some vinyl or wicker type outdoor fabric which would be fantastic, it's just a lot more expensive than I would expect raw furniture fabric to be :/ so I just ended up nabbing a medium outdoor hardy area rug for a cheap price

It's been awhile since I made an update, but this is where I'm at now: Crown moulding is installed and painted. Double-curtain rods and sheer curtains are up, but talked to my aunt who mentioned that I should consider reinstalling them above the window to give the windows a longer sleeker look. Took down the art deco chandelier to have it cleaned and fixed, but I accidentally tipped it over while it was on the floor and it shattered into a thousand pieces. Turns out it was made of cheap pewter. So I found and installed a Turkish style chandelier I received from a seller in Turkey on Etsy. I also installed similar styled Turkish sconces (I'll be replacing the globes with more colorful ones soon). I pulled up the carpet from both rooms. I painted the fireplace insert black. I painted the ugly gold lamp stands black, and added new shades. Things still left to do: I'm still looking for a chandelier for the living room. Repair and refinish the floors (the floor needs a number of boards refilled). Figure out what to do about the gap between the floor and the quarter-round/baseboard that was revealed after I pulled the carpet up. Replace current projector screen with a floor-rising one so that I'm no longer covering 80% of the front window at all times. Install a picture rail about an inch and a half under the crown moulding. Update/add electrical outlets (which will include an upgrade to my breaker). replace carpet in the living room with a Persian style carpet that's approx. 9' x 12'. Replace couch and coffee table. Retile the front of the fire-place. Have a number of the cracks in the plaster repaired. Acquire and hang paintings and framed posters on the walls. And that's just the Living Room and Dining Room. Sigh...
