Cold weather, late start: too late to start seeds in zone 6?
Comments (4)Hi Calliope, I know what you mean, but those plants that can be planted before frost date usually can take frost easily. My nasturtiums, e.g. went through a few snow falls last year with their beautiful leaves and flowers before they finally yielded. I agree that one must know his area well and know how to estimate (though we cannot be 100% accurate). For some annuals, I wait 2 weeks after our formal frost dates, then check the forecast for the next 10 days, and if it looks good I can plant them. For tender annuals, I might wait a little longer or start indoor. For half-hardy or hardy annuals, I can start earlier....See MoreStarting late. Missed spring. Can I still start seeds & bulbs?
Comments (5)Since this is the Vegetable Gardening Forum I'll stick to talking about the tomato seeds. Check out the Bulbs and the many flower forums for more info on them. ;) The tomatoes can be started from seed 6-8 weeks before your plant out date - which usually 1-2 weeks after your last frost date. In your zone I am guessing that is the end of May? That would make it too late to start tomatoes from seed for the best results. But if you have some seeds for some early varieties you could try them and still get fruit from them before your first fall frost. Otherwise I think I'd plan to go with tomato transplants this year and save the seeds for next year. Good luck with your garden. Dave...See MoreEdger troubleshooting - won't start
Comments (19)Vlr: 1st put a new spark plug into the plug wire and pull over the engine with the plug grounded against the cylinder head cooling fin. Check for spark , you may need assistance or a large pair of vice grips to secure the plug gently against the fin . If you have spark (bright blue) your ok there . Next You should have drained the gas from the fuel tank from the gas line off the tank to the carb , no problem your still learning . You have drained oil from the crankcase into the carb when you inverted the edger for gas drainage , so the carb cleaner addition into the Venturi (1st or second picture Hole that you described) . As far as Starting Fluid I normally only use as last resort since many do not have any lubrication properties and can damage carb diaphragm and seals etc. The Carb Cleaner will help in starting itself since it is flammable . However from what I see the Johnsen's Product would be the best since it is recommended for Diesel Engines and only spray into the Spark Plug Hole not the Carb . Once you get this engine running from what I advised in my previous note , please ensure to properly drain your oil once the engine is warmed . Did you find a drain plug within the crankcase area similar to your yard tractor ? Last but not least ensure to spray 1/4 can of the carb cleaner and 1 ounce of Stabil within the fresh fuel since I don't see any Dry gas or Liquid concentrated fuel cleaner in your illustration , I think your also have serious moisture carry over from bad fuel during the 2 yr storage. Be patient and wear safety glass's when working on this project the chemicals are corrosive , wash your hands accordingly lol . This may take a few attempts to clear the water , debris and varnish from within the carb circuits . As previously advised let the fuel once treated sit in the tank for at least 30 minutes prior to attempting to start the engine via the Quick start or Carb Cleaner spray into the Spark Plug Hole . Good Luck keep us posted ....See MoreTroubleshooting + anyone sowing seeds now?
Comments (15)Editor, I planted out many WS babies late this year, because I had terrible tendonitis during peak gardening season. Both in small pots and the ground. Many of the transplanted seedlings didn't grow much at all, some even disappeared. But my experience is that many seedlings seem to focus on root growth when they are transplanted late in the season, not so much top growth. Although I might lose some, I have marked their spots, because I expect many of them to start growing next Spring with a vengeance! Btw, I did sow 1 container so far this year - American Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus). This tree normally germinates in 2 years because it requires warm then cold stratification periods of several months. I am warm-stratifying it in the house, then it's going outside in December. This is my first attempt at WSing a tree - and hope it sprouts next Spring! :)...See MoreJoJo (Nevada 9A)
