Talk to a reputable general contractor please. He'll have connections for everyone else.

You need to have a firm grasp on what your budget is going in and understand that anytime you start a project, unexpected things pop up. There's also the "if you give a mouse a cookie" phenomenon, in which once you start something, your wants expand and you end up with way more that you started to do, also increasing costs. If you think you're doing a $30k master bath (not unreasonable as a starting point), you can easily double or triple that depending on where you are and what finishes you select. Once you have your budget nailed down, ask your friends, neighbors, dentist, pastor, coworkers and anyone else you have contact with if they have recommendations. I'd hire someone recommended by a former client over a person off the street any day, even if it costs more.

Oh, yeah... Joanna Gaines does not do all that designing on her own (and maybe none of it anymore), she's just the face. She has landscape designers, interior designers, kitchen designers, etc. Larger firms will have these people, too, either as employees or contractors. It's rare to find person who can do everything (even if they tell you they can!).

Hire a designer to give you an overall plan for everything that you want done. A good designer is able to be helpful with everything you are contemplating. You didn't mention exterior landscaping and hardscaping - that is generally a different skill set but advising on colors for exterior or a house and stuff like that is generally handled by a designer.

A good designer doesn't simply help you select furniture and arrange it for you. I did a gut remodel and my designer provided an entire design plan (including furniture and arrangement at the end). She drew up plans which were submitted to the city for permits AND to the GC for the bidding process. You can't get an accurate bid from a GC without detailed plans because otherwise they are not bidding on the actual project.

You will pay for these kinds of plans but you will own them. The designer will also offer advice on how to do the remodeling in stages that make the most sense which would include economies in terms of doing work at the same time if it makes more sense.

A GC - however good the GC is in terms of their skill set is not a designer. They execute plans and they collaborate with a good designer in terms of how to bring plans to fruition in the best way both aesthetically and functionally.
