Comments (23)I don't know why you'd want a mechanical engineer to look at a house. They deal with mechanical systems and don't know anything about residential construction unless it's their hobby. There are many types of civil engineers. A structural engineer is one type of type of civil engineer. Not my quote, but I like it: What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers? Mechanical Engineers build weapons. Civil Engineers build targets. If you are going to use an engineer as an inspection service, make sure they are from an outfit like this (attached). The PE/structural engineer we used to check beam sizes, roof loads, etc., is also a builder. We know someone that worked on a house with him. The guy couldn't execute on details. DH is a civil engineer and a licensed builder. They don't teach window istallation, flashing, siding, roofing, etc., in engineering programs. You can't assume PE = builder = inspector. In fact, I would bet that is rarely the case. Here is a link that might be useful: PEs and Inspection Services...See MoreTiny white-ish bugs on Podocarpus in Southern Florida
Comments (10)Hi Ken, thank you for the reply! I had looked at Mealybugs on Google prior to posting and thought they looked the closest, but they are slightly different. I suppose there are many variations? We're on our 4th pesticide attempt, none of the pesticides have work to date. So far we've tried Bifenthrin, Imidacloprid, Lambda-cyhalothrin, and Deltamethrin (the last two listed there are micro-capsule style pesticides, Demand & Suspend). None of these have had any effect. I'm a homeowner and work in technology, I really don't know about pesticides and I'm sure what I've done is all wrong, lol. Any ideas of the best way to treat these? We have about 50' of Podocarpus hedges about 7' tall, and they're all covered in these bugs. Thanks again!...See MoreCool.....or Creepy Kids' room?
Comments (26)I don't like it personally(except for a couple portraits), but I've no idea whether it's creepy for a child/children who live there. Certain toys etc inform us(how to say it in normal English?) it's not an infant toom but rather a toddler's one..or maybe they share. I think parents know their child and know what they find creepy now. Something very innocent can become extremely creepy. Something that we'd find creepy wouldn't be perceived as such. Might also change as time goes by. To me, it does look unbalanced..the room. Then we don't see the opposite side well. I don't like the treatment of that hutch, like, at all, but I don't think very young kids would associate it with blood, at that point of their lives....See MoreA landlords nightmare.
Comments (80)"I should send them a fruit basket or something." I've had tenants in our rental house for two years who have been great. After they renewed last year I paid to have landscaping improved, and asked my gardener to work directly with them on projects they would enjoy--new sod in the backyard for their little boys etc. This year I was planning to replace the front door which they had also asked about doing, but they are relocating so I won't do it right now. As a landlord I try to be responsive to any problem or issue and this annual 'bonus' of improving the property so that the tenant will benefit seems like a win-win. As for dying in the house, my friend from whom we inherited the property had cancer and was very determined to die at home; we brought in hospice for him to allow that. It was a sad but natural passing at his place of deepest comfort and security. I've not disclosed it and won't because it really doesn't seem to be anything that will or should affect anyone else....See MoreHU-187528210
