Rock salt and asparagus
Comments (20)Asparagus competes poorly with ground covers (like weeds), but Na levels become toxic very quickly, and chloride is no better for plants at such high doses. Regardless of the fact that asparagus is relatively tolerant to NaCl, applying enough salt to kill genetically vigorous weeds is not something that university/ extension service sites recommend. Salt also causes a crust to form at the soil surface which interferes with water penetration and soil gas exchange. Anything positive salt applications might offer would be in the area of weed control, and certainly not in the area of nutritive betterment; so, it would seem that eliminating the salt applications and finding a less limiting method of keeping weeds in check would be in the best interest of plant vitality and yields. It looks like salt applications is choosing one of two evils. Whether or not it's even the lesser ..... Al...See MoreRock salt and algae
Comments (4)Salt is a wonder tonic. But like most items, with moderation. The general feeling I'm hearing in the pond community I have contact with is the two main concerns of salting are: damage to plants and maintaining salt levels (usually low levels .10%), you are possibly contributing to salt-resistant bugs. Kind of like always taking a certain level of medicine, after a while, bug becomes resistant to it. You need to up the dose. Some guys swear they never have salted their ponds. You'll hear both sides of the issue. Take it with a grain of "salt" ( I had to do it). read the article by Doc Johnson linked below. Comments (6)Don't feel silly for asking. Sometimes those Kirby salesmen/Bergere Lamp websites/herbal weight loss emails/Mary Kay seminars/ect can be really convincing if they catch one in the right frame of mind. If they were not, they would not be in business long. They always catch a few fish. Better to ask on an anonymous board than to bring it up at work. You are safe here. You will be protected from that Amway guy's pitch and you will never refinance your loan with junk bonds. I have found through experience that it is always better to ask when in doubt....See MoreLyban zone 4
