Bermudagrass in asparagus....use salt as herbicide?
Comments (13)Ortho sells a selective herbicide which only kills true grasses == it used to be sold under the name "Ortho Grass-B-Gone," but I believe last year it was relabeled as something like "Ortho Grass Killer for Ornamentals." It can be used safely right over the top of a vast number of ornamentals -- the few things other than grasses which it will kill or damage are listed on the label. It only comes in a 32 ounce RTU spray bottle, and it is somewhat hard to find -- I think Home Depot is the only major chain which carries it from year to year in my area. It is truly a lifesaver for eliminating grassy incursions into flower beds, vegetable gardens, etc., because it has systemic action and kills the roots of quackgrass and similar grasses as well as the top. I buy about 6 or 8 bottles a year. Obviously, can't be used to get rid of the quackgrass that infiltrates the planting of miscanthus or around the base of bamboo. And, from experience, it will kill baby's breath and damage juniper and sedum, although they recover. But, for the vast majority of plants, they do not seem to have any reaction to it, and just grow as if nothing happened, while the weed grasses growing around them turn brown and die. Great product....See MoreRock salt for weeds
Comments (6)If you could add a pic of the trouble area, suggestions could be much more accurate. Cracks in sidewalk may just need to be spackled with concrete. I don't understand the crack between the lawn and sidewalk either. If there's an actual gap, you could get some dirt & grass seed. My dad used to scalp those edges too close with weed trimmer, which would kill the grass and what took its' place was Oxalis stricta. Maybe you've inadvertently created a situation where the grass can't survive at the edge? Many weeds tolerate salt just fine, I would want to know what the weeds are first, to see if they are sensitive to salt. If not, salt won't kill them. As a long-term solution, this isn't practical, as said above. Rain will move the salt in the direction of the flow of water when it rains, which could affect the lawn and/or large landscape plants like trees and shrubs....See MoreSalt Water Pools, Rocks and Sandstone
Comments (6)Hi - I have a SWG and have a stacked flagstone weeping wall, as well as a stacked flagstone spa spillover and neither have shown any signs of erosion, corrosion, or pitting despite water running continuously over these things 6 hours each day. I've had the pool since August of 2006. I have done quite a bit of research on this topic, and much of what's out there is very anecdotal, even the stories written about in the link that kurtv provided. However, given my research and personal experience with these things, this is what I know: - many people forget that chlorine is just as much a corrosive as salt is! In fact, what makes salt (NaCl from High School Chemistry) corrosive is the Cl (Chlorine) part of the molecule. - many SWG owners are under the impression that having a SWG means no longer having to watch their water. I hear so many SWG owners say that their pool is so great and worry-free that all they have to do is dump a bag of salt in once or twice a season! If you don't watch your water, it could turn into a really corrosive agent! - another thing to watch out for - stabilizer (CYA or cyanuric acid) levels. Stabilizer is required in outdoor chlorine (yes, salt pools ARE chlorine pools as well) pools because it helps reduce the breakdown of chlorine via the sun's UV rays. But more importantly, one side-effect of not having enough stabilizer is that it magnifies the corrosive effects of chlorine! For example, with little or no stabilizer, chlorine at normal levels (4-5 ppm) actually becomes a 30x STRONGER disinfectant AND oxidizer! Now guess where the corrosion comes from? Having said all this, my conclusion? Enjoy your SWG, but PLEASE watch your water! Having a SWG doesn't mean you don't have to watch your water, but in fact the opposite. I test my Cl and pH levels every 2 days, and test TA, CH, and CYA levels weekly. I know people who take their water to Leslie's for testing only every month or so!...See MoreFake rock or prefab waterfalls for salt water pool?
Comments (3)I have done both with salt pools. If you use granite or other similarly hard rocks you will not have a problem. It is normally cheaper to use real rock than the prefab types and similar problems exist such as the white calcium line that builds up under hard water conditions. On prefab stone I've seen the color come off trying to remove the hard water deposits. Keep good water chemistry and you shouldn't have a problem. Your PB should be able to guide you to an acceptable rock if he is marginally experienced....See Moreronalawn82
