Durability of alder wood for my kitchen cabinets

I have fallen in love with a stain that is only available in Alder wood. I've read that Alder is a soft hardwood and is more easily damaged. Is this really something that I should be concerned about? We have 3 boys and I'm wondering how worried I should be about damage. I am NOT a perfectionist (I'm a mom of 3 boys so perfectionism is impossible in my world :), but I also don't want to end up with really damaged cabinets in a few years. I'm wondering if I should pick a harder wood in a color that isn't my favorite, or just not worry so much about damage and pick the color that I love. Thoughts??
