New This Week: 3 Kitchens With Beautiful Midtone Wood Cabinets
Warm woods complement a variety of other materials to create rooms full of character
Other special features. Supreme Gold granite countertops with a “very active” pattern (Thulson’s description). Alder cabinets from Crystal Cabinets painted in the company’s Mushroom color, distressed and with black highlighting for a rustic look. Natural slate backsplash in Brazilian Multicolor. Apron-front sink.
Designer secret. “Make most, if not all, the decisions in the kitchen based upon function,” Thulson says. “Good form, or design, always should follow great functionality of the space. Making a kitchen or bath beautiful is the easy part. The thing that the homeowner will love about their kitchen over time is the function of the space: workspace, traffic patterns, great appliances, great lighting, wide pathways.”

“Uh-oh” moment. “The farmhouse sink had just come on the market when we selected it,” Thulson says. “It was very popular, and it had to be backordered. This put a kink in the finishing timeline. The counters, backsplash and appliances all had to wait for the sink to arrive. I loved how the homeowners handled the whole process. They were very patient and understood that things happen in this process.”
