I used to have two dogs. The big one was named Sparrow and the small one was named Gus. When I would call them to come into the house, I would shout “Sparrow! Gus!....Sparrow! Gus!....Sparrow! Gus!” One day it dawned on me that it sounded like I was shouting “Asparagus! Asparagus!”

Collectively, I would call them Asparagus after that.

Individually though, I would call Gus, Goose or Gustav and Sparrow was called Sproinky Bedoinky.

I now have one little dog named Frank. I sometimes call him Frankendoodle or Frankiedeeroosevelt.

I used to have a cat called Boots, not because of fur markings, but because the first thing she done when I brought her home as a kitten was hop inside one of my boots. My son also wanted her not to have a ‘girls’ name.

After that, due to her little idiosyncrasies she became Bubs, Bubbles, Dribbles, or Flump.

I once had a beloved little orange cat named Gypsy that I sometimes referred to as the Binky Bunkster. All he ever wanted was to be in my arms--not demanding, but he was so happy there. My present cat, a muted tortoise named Maisie, is sometimes Minky or the Little Mink.

iWe had a cat called Tessa who was referred to when she was being manic as "Tess of the Baskervilles". Her co-cat at the time was Motley, aka "Mot the Grot". The next cat, Mischief, aka Missy Kitty, was also Itty Bitty Pretty Kitty. Our current pair, Nadia and Katya are, respectively, Puffy Fluffy Cat/Pretty Puffy Cat/Nid-Nad/Niddy-Naddy/Puff, and Kitty Kahty/Little Miss Muscle/Cuddle Kitty/Dash.

Our last dog was officially named Lady. Most often she was called Lady Girly (or LG). Sometimes Fuzzbutt. And when she was lying in an inconvenient spot, Speedbump.

SO is the nickname giving one. Its often a shortened version of their names. Muffin is "Muff Muff" or Muffie. Otis is simply "O". Buster is "pup pup." And Mudfoot is "foot." Sammy he called Sam Sam. Old boy, and knucklehead. He answered to all of them.

We had a cat named Spaz that we would usually call Spaz. He earned the name after he adopted us as a stray.

Maggie was Maggie-moo, Queen of the Cushions, and sweet-sweet.

Murphy is often called MurphBoo (to go with the Maggie-moo). He's not my cat, he's my child's. So Mostly, he's "Murphy NO! Murphy GET DOWN!" Or, Ash, come get your cat!

Chyla is... nothing other than Chyla-girl. She'll get there!

It’s funny how a nickname can morph into some other name, and then even another name.

My cat Peeka, was Peeka-boo, Boo & Peeka-doodle-boo. Cats: Aspen & Ivan have just learned their names. No nick names .....yet.

No nickname but I make up little nonsensical rhymes around her name, in Russian. She seems to enjoy the silly sing song of it.

My young lab's name is Shasta, but she prefers to be called "Treat!"

LOL! The only time my dog gets called by his real name (Chewy) is when I call him in from outdoors. Otherwise, he is known as the chew-man, sugar bear, pooky, fatty furry pants, commander fuzzy butt, chewby-doo and the closer it comes to grooming time, wooly mammoth or just wooly :-)

He also sleeps very deeply and soundly so sometimes he is referred to as dead dog.......as in "wake up, dead dog...time to go pee"!!

My kitties have many nicknames. Moshi, aka Mosh-Patosh, Moshi-Mo, Mo-Mo, or Baby Girl. Molly, aka Molly Polly Tamale Pie, Mol-Mo, PITA, or Pretty Girl.

So funny how we "expand" on names. Our cat, Chloe, was often Chloders-Patoders or Punkin-Wunkin. Our dog, Buddy, was Budrick or Budrick-Kanudrick. I also called him Magoo a lot. No idea where that came from.

My poodle, Coco, in addition to Princess, is Coco Puff and Coco Bean. We had a mutt years ago named Muffin. She was called Biscuit, Donut, Tootsie Roll and Muffin Puffin!! Our children were little at the time and they came up with these. She was the sweetest dog ever!

Margaret P. Jones is called Maggie Mae or Magglet. Her Co-Cat Charlotte is never called Charlotte but usually Bitsey or Itty/Bitty/Kitty. A previous cat Agatha had the most nicknames. She was the Queen of cats in every way but the most common one was Aglet. because she bit them off your shoelaces. Though a very large cat she thought of herself as small and wee so she had lots of teeny tiny names. She was the original ittybittykitty.

Lily -- Lily-loo, morphed in to "woo & woo woo. Then to "Lil" and "Liller."

Lucy -- Lucy-loo and Loose.

Now both of them are collectively "Loo-lee" as renamed by our almost 2 yr old grandson. He calls them both by the same name.... and of course they answer!

Leo - Budge Budge or Budge or Budgey because he always budging/poking/jamming you with his nose!!

My golden retriever Leona Mercedes was called Leah.

My huge husky lab Jagger was called him Jaggen wagon because Jagger means apple cart puller. He got also called Jaggsy. Leah and Jagger have been gone many years but never forgotten.

We all call Noble my labradoodle Nobsy or Noby woby.

Marabelle Our poodle cocker spaniel cross gets called Merry Bells all the time.

For my two kittens we call Mica our girl tabby cat Mia Musa. In Danish we say Musakat. And so it's my mouser.

Nougat our orange and white kitten always gets called Noogsy often accompanied by a gentle knuckle rub on the forehead which he loves.

Hobbes our nephew's cat always gets called Hobbit. He has big wide paws.

My cat Midnight gets called Catzarina, Meezkatz and Kittycat.

Our Mort cat is called MoMo. We had an orange tabby, Gus, who had the nickname "Hambone." Any time you got the camera out, he'd come running and flop around cutely in front of you. Clearly he couldn't have known what the camera was actually for, but we must have given him a lot of encouragement when we took pics of him as a kitten. Sometimes you couldn't get a picture of something/someone without him photo-bombing it.

I forgot to add --- so many cute pets here!

This was so cute I had to join in . I have 3 mini schnauzers. The father is Muggles , or Muggs , Mr. Muggs , or Schmuggles . The mother is Maddie , Miss Maddie , Mad Day , Queen Maddie or Late for Lunch as she is always tagging along behind the others , and then there is Mini Muggs , Mini Min or just plain Min ( have always said he should have been called Bob Barker as he absolutely cannot control his barking . We lost one of our other pups who was MacDuff , or Duffer Dog , or Duffer . He was huge for a mini Schnauzer and when standing beside his mother people could not believe she gave birth to him as she is so very tiny. She is the size of a toy schnauzer if there is such a thing.

Ellie’s got lots of off the cuff names but the most popular are Elliebug, Elliebellie, Cuddlebug, ElliePoopsAlot, Sweetiegirl and pup pup.

Yes. Chewie, real name Chewbacca, is called Chew and sometimes Chewmeister. Emily is Em Em or Old Girl. She is not doing well these last couple of days. The vet thought she had diabetes but she doesn't, more likely liver cancer. He gave me some Flagyl to give her if/when she has another bout of pancreatitis last week. Well yesterday she needed it.

My granddog, Princess Buttercup, I didn't name her is called Butter or Butter Butter Peanut Butter.

A lot of pets but not a lot of pet names other than their real names. I call Snoop the horse, Noop or Noopy or Old Goat when he is kicking his stall to hurry me up. I call Emery, also a horse, Goof Ball. I have names I call Mariah, horse, best left unsaid. Same for Bane.

Fabio, barn cat, is Fob or Farb, always followed by He Human.

Striped Stockings, my oldest cat at 16, is 'Triped 'Tockings. Little Mancow is Mancow.calm....not .com.

I think those are the only ones I call names, other than their own.
