Thomas needs to be inside draped over the back of a chair like my Thomas. One of my other cats is not happy that I will not let him out. Like that is happening at -6F. I like his perky little ears too much to let that happen.

Thanks for the replies Auteck. The light green color is a combination of two things. First, believe it or not, almost everything you see is new growth. I got two inches in just nine days. The established Rye is under all of that hairy light green. I cut very low.. 5/8ths regularly, and took it down to 3/8ths before aerifying. Second, when I put the seed down, I sprayed for Pythium to prevent seed damp-off. I use a spray-tracking dye that is light green, and it is masking the dark green of the established lawn a little. My yearly overseeding is probably more like a yearly renovation. I core aerify the bejeezus out of it leaving more holes than soil, and frankly, probably not a whole lot of previous season turf survives. I'll post an update pic in a couple of weeks when it's dark, short, and striped appropriately! @SoccerDad. The cultivar is Lesco Low-Mow Double Eagle TTPR. Irrigation is 1.5 inches weekly without fail. Fertilization is every 30 days (except during deep summer) with 24-0-11. Bayer Aliette is sprayed every 14 days from June 1st through November to combat Pythium Blight. Daconil is sprayed every 14 days offset from the Aliette to prevent Brown Patch, and all other disease. Mowing is every other day (in season) at 5/8ths with a 27" Tru-Cut reel mower.

I dunno...I'm a "hands-off" kinda girl. We had lows in the teens last week and I had a lot of sprouts. I was lamenting that I DIDN'T have snow to insulate them. I left them alone, snow or no snow. I just got a chance to look at them a couple days ago and they are all doing fine (and I have more sprouts, besides). I WS with two to three (to four or more) of snow. Snow definitely doesn't hurt the unsprouted seeds. And if you're getting enough snow to cover the seedlings, they might be better off than without the snow cover. Moisture holds more warmth than dry air. Linda

A news report from NASA says climate change is resulting in greater extremes: Dry areas are getting dryer; Wet areas are getting wetter. I don't know *where* we are in that spectrum. I would have said 'moderate' (30 miles north of Chicago), but after last summer's extreme drought...maybe there will be no more 'moderates'. The pears along our driveway loved our two days of 70's and 80's. It was like watching popcorn pop, the way they went from buds to full bloom. Our magnolia is full out, even dropping some blooms. Everything is hurry-up-greening, tired of 'holding it all in' during our long, cold Spring. Sorry about your pear, littlebug. A friend in Denver said her fruit trees had to be enjoyed the same day they bloomed, because they'd be covered in snow the next day -- but at least hers didn't split. Our pears are columnar -- are Bradford's more 'spreading'?

Just thought I'd post the results I had in one garden bed that's clay-loam. Last year I had amended this bed with home-made compost. Everything did well last year as first year plantings. This year they suffered from too little light. (I just put the roses there to get them through the winter and hoping they might like the eastern exposure. Heathcliff, Sugar Moon and Falstaff like sun in my neck of the woods, it seems. I'll probably be moving the viking Queen next Spring as she's a fraction of the size of her sister in full sun, and hasn't bloomed since Spring while her sister would be non-stop if not for the midge.) Anyway, the soil was very dry even with rain. I thought the heavy leaf layer prevented water. I stuffed the empty holes with alfalfa hay, compost and leaf mold until I decided what to plant. I also put the alfalfa under the leaves in the rest of the bed and gave it additional compost. Wow, when I went to plant Lavender Lassie and two hydrangeas, all the soil was so soft and fluffy and moist, even though we had less rain that earlier. I'm now prepping my holes in advance of next Spring and filling them with the same and covering the entire bed with alfalfa hay, etc. The new plantings have taken off even in the reduced light of late summer. I repeated this in another new bed and Mme Alfred Carriere and Awakening seem to love it even in their NE exposure. (Of course, they could just be responding to being in the ground vs. in pots. : ) ) Lesson learned. : ) I'm also trying gypsum on some new beds I'm prepping since they're on an incline. I'll report back.

Nova wasn't impressed either. I have an enclosed porch that is much warmer than outside, and he regularly likes to wander around his "outdoor space"... but right now, it's a NOPE. He wanted out yesterday, and lasted maybe 60 seconds before he came back in and hasn't been at the door since, lol.

We are supposed to have one last push of several inches of snow and super cold, then it starts getting better come Wednesday with temps back in the 20's again.

Thomas was a stray a couple of years before I officially adopted him. When he wants out, he wants out. No matter the temp. Then he plays the "I'll let her beg me to come in" game. Just before I end the count-down from 10, to close the door, he'll hurry in. Sometimes I think it actually gets too warm for him indoors, he used to being out. However, I will argue with him when the temps are too low. Luckily he will use the inside cat's litter box if he's desperate.

Even though I am hoping for one big snow here, I have to say that I am ready for spring. Always happens this time of year!

Thomas looks to be a sweetie. Hope he comes in quickly.

I hope we make it through winter without another big storm. Icy conditions predicted for tonight. I’m staying in, but that’s pretty much what I always do. I hope Thomas had the sense to come in. I remember letting my cat out in cold and snow and how she would do that that “what the heck?” move, turn tail and scamper back in. Then I’d get the “ what were you thinking” look.

Susanwv. He looks just like our Bud ! He was a stray when he came to us 3 years ago, indoor/outdoor, no matter the temp. He sleeps next to me at night though.
