Wintersowing in 8 to 15 inches of snow

Hi!

We are getting 8 - 15 inches of snow in Denver today. Any wintersowed milk jugs that have sprouts, I put in the garage. What about the ones that haven't sprouted? Should I leave them outside?

They will be fine.

Wow, I just posted on another Coloradan's (??) thread about all the snow. That stinks!

I hope at least that it melts quickly for you!

Terene, Your columbine origami mixed color seeds will bloom the first year from seed. I planted mine a few years ago in mid March and they bloomed in June through the end of July. They have a long bloom period, rebloom actually and you don't need to dead head them. A friend of mine sowed some of my origami blue seeds last spring, in mid April and they bloomed for her all of the month of July. Since your's are mixed colors, you don't know what each plant will bloom in color till the bloom. You might want to plant each seedling as an individual until it blooms. Once you know which seedling is which color, when they finish blooming, you can move the plants into clumps of like colors to have larger plants for next year. If you don't care if they bloom mixed together than just plant them as clumps. I sowed mine, but they where all individual colors in cottage cheese containers, with about 15 seeds together in each container sort of scattered in the center of the container. then I planted the seedlings as one clump. If you purchase the plants in the nurseries, it is usually in a large container that has at least 10 plants in it. That's how a friend of mine that owns a farm and greenhouse in the area I live in sows seeds, and told me how to sow the seeds. Hello everyone!!! Hi Greg!!! I have always enjoyed taking pics...I would love to take a class sometime...but I just love looking at things from a different angle!!! I really miss the old cameras...35mm where I could manually work the camera..I do love the digital cameras..but I feel that I had more control from the old timers!!! "trying not to show my age!!!" LOL... Jim..I would love to see pics of those icicles...I find them quite fascinating...I especially love the ice covered tree too! There is a pic when I sign onto the photobucket page...there is an ice covered tree that look like yours..check it out!!! It;s a beauty...but yours was more massive than this one... ncpalm...I wish that it will be 2 months...more like 3 for us...The sabals are very hardy!!! But I'm not going to take a chance on the weight on the fronds...My hubby helps alot...when he needs help tying up the boat during hurricanes...I don't complain...because I know that he will help and paybacks are great!!! The problem isnÂt the warm when you bring them in, Sis, itÂs the COLD when you take them back out! If you bring the plants/seedlings inside and they become acclimated to the warm, they lose their ability to handle the cold, and then if you put them back outside they really are likely to freeze. If theyÂre in a place thatÂs too warm for too long, you need to "harden them off" all over again, before they can be safely left outside again. Even with the warm days weÂve had lately, itÂs been getting cold enough over nite for them to maintain their ability to handle the cold, but warm days AND nites will really mess with that ability. And, I donÂt know this for sure, but I suspect the winter sown things that have come up and grown in the cold are even better able to handle the cold than things youÂve started inside and then hardened off to put outside. I suspect even the annuals would be ok, but IÂm not positive, and I really, really donÂt want to mess up somebodyÂs baby plants, but I think leaving them outside with a cover of some sort (blanket or layers of newspaperÂwhich would obviously blow away today!) would be way plenty to keep them safe. I always have some reseeded annuals coming up in my yard every year, and I give them absolutely no protection whatsoever, and they always do just fineÂunless I pull them out! ;-) And theyÂre not even in a little winter sown "tent!" Our warm temps this year have probably tricked a few things, but most things wonÂt germinate and come up until itÂs "their time!" ThatÂs why winter sowing works! But, in any event, even if youÂve started something outside, if you bring it in for more than a day or two, be sure you gradually harden it off again before leaving it outside again. Thanks a lot Sam. hmm.... compost tea. You give me another great idea Sam. Before putting my home made compost in the beds / pots, I can make a tea and feed roses in pots with that tea too. Some of my old pots do not have much space on the top to put more compost. Could you explain your method of making compost tea please. Actually, Folks in Denver are not complaining. We have only had 17 inches of snow all winter and we need the moisture!

Hi! NE colo here. This must be our storm of the season! Out here we only had about 8" this winter -- so this one is (sort of) welcome (if I didn't have to drive), except we're getting lots of wind with it. I sure wish I would have gotten the rest of what I wanted to WS done & out before the storm...! Bummer! I also didn't check to see I i had any sprouts in the ones I do have out! Hope I didn't blow it! this is my first yr to WS.

Well, we Colorado Wintersowers will just need to cross our fingers. In Denver, I currently have a good 8 inches of snow in my yard, and it is not supposed to stop until tomorrow. Maybe by tomorrow afternoon we can venture out and see what nature has decided to do! This is my first time wintersowing,too! I am sure that this will all melt in a few days, as it usually does in Colorado.

Hi Camontour, me too! (WSing in the garage, but that's a lot of snow outside!) It is good for us to get this storm, just hope all the flowering trees & blooms do okay. And our ws jugs, too...

I dunno...I'm a "hands-off" kinda girl. We had lows in the teens last week and I had a lot of sprouts. I was lamenting that I DIDN'T have snow to insulate them.
I left them alone, snow or no snow.
I just got a chance to look at them a couple days ago and they are all doing fine (and I have more sprouts, besides).
I WS with two to three (to four or more) of snow. Snow definitely doesn't hurt the unsprouted seeds. And if you're getting enough snow to cover the seedlings, they might be better off than without the snow cover. Moisture holds more warmth than dry air.

I'm definitely "forum-challenged" today. I meant to say, "I WS with two to three (to four or more) FEET of snow"...and that is that much snow OUTSIDE...not snow)standing at the sink sowing and watering container of seeds with me.

I'll stop posting today.
I think the college needs to have another "Spring Break"!

We are expecting that storm to blow in around midnight.
I moved mine inside today because of the wind.
The forecast said blizzard condition's so I didn't want
my jugs & seeds to blow away. I think some of the
heavier stuff will be okay. I hope so!

I am headed in to town later so I don't have to drive
in blowing snow on the way to work tomorrow.

It is hard to imagine that much snow. Seeing blizzard conditions on the news is amazing. All of you guys be careful and stay safe in the bad weather.

snow on the seedlings will protect them from the coldest weather. It acts as insulation.

Congratulations on the snow! (???) If we were getting 15 inches I would be crying along with Playintheyard. We had relentless snow storms ALL winter.

The upside is that snow is an excellent insulator and moisturizer for the "herbaceous layer" and all plant roots, as well as WS containers and pot ghettos.

Just to update: All my jugs are outside and doing well, about 75% have sprouts. AND it is snowing AGAIN in Denver. Not complaining, happy for the moisture!
