What are your favorite bath towels/accessories and why?
Comments (26)Karin - the vanity is Dover Woods in a Beluga stain. The Ivory Supreme was found on a wide hunt for Super White - and a granite yard had both, which was very hard to find at the time this spring. We love it, but the stone has fissures and one piece broke during installation, and the replacement slab, even though I approved it, is not quite as beautiful as the original. Soon I will post pix when the bathroom is completed and you will see the other pieces from the original slab. Anyway, back to the towels - I wound up with Fieldcrest Luxury from Target - the colors are great and I think I like the feel of the towels. Tough to tell until a bunch of washes though. Still looking for other accessories.......See MoreWhat is your favorite detergent/softener and wash/rinse temp?
Comments (22)chuckwagon - Lots of reasons to use vinegar in the rinse. 1. It's cheap and effective. 2. It eliminates the soap residue. 3. Vinegar is too mild to harm fabrics but strong enough to dissolve alkalis in soaps and detergents. 4. Vinegar also breaks down uric acid, so adding 1 cup vinegar to the rinse water is especially good for babies' clothes. 5. To get wool and cotton blankets soft and fluffy as new, add 2 cups white vinegar to a full tub of rinse water. 6. Vinegar softens clothes without a bunch of harmful chemicals. Fabric softener is toxic. Softeners make clothes more flamable. For sensitive folks, the perfumes and chemicals can cause a plethora of problems (skin, breathing, etc.). Softeners make towels less absorbant. Here is a list of just some of the chemicals found in popular fabric softeners and dryer sheets: Benzyl Acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant Ethanol: On the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA's Hazardous Waste list Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled And don't think you are avoiding the toxins by choosing unscented brands of softeners/sheets. You're not. -Grainlady...See MoreWhirlpool Duet (WFW9200) Hot water on Cold Wash setting?
Comments (29)Also check the actual temp on your hot water heater. I believe that’s where you’d check it. We’ve never done this, but my son & his wife have 3 little kids. They set the hot water on their HWHelater to a lower temp so that when their little ones wash their hands, if they choose hot water, it won’t get too hot & burn them. I like to have SCALDING HOT water available to wash my dishes so I wouldn’t want to turn my HWHeater lower. But if you’re so concerned with using cold water for your clothes, you can turn it down while doing cold loads. Warm water is not going to shrink or ruin your clothes. It doesn’t even do too much to the colors. If it did, like one commenter said, our bodies are typically about 90 degrees Fahrenhei. My clothes don’t loose their color or shrink while I’m wearing them. Also, bathing suits says to wash in cold water. I typically do, but I go in hot tubs a lot, I have suits that have been in a lot & no shrinkage or color loss yet & that water is HOT! Just another observation...See MoreFavorite bath towels?
Comments (32)For the member who doesn't want thick towels, I'd recommend Ralph Lauren classics. You can usually find them at TJMaxx/Homegoods stores at great prices. Nice quality, but not bulky. I've pieced together sets between Macys and TJMaxx. Thicker- RL Greenwich towels, currently on sale at Horchow. if you decide to go that way, google for coupon codes. Thick, thirsty, soft, love! I also have Restoration Hardware towels. These are my current favorites with some reservations. #1 At first I thought I'd made a mistake. They were so bulky and heavy it was hard to wrap them around your hair. Washing and drying for several weeks took out the extra lint or whatever, so now I feel they are a comfortable thickness. Very nice. #2 I have a "water saving" :( washing machine, and was struck by how quickly my RH towels stained. They didn't stain, it was my @#$$@W@Q$%%# washing machine! They are so thick I need to wash them in warm water, on the heavy duty setting. No more "stains"....See MoreCavimum
